I know you can get your skills past 20 if you use items for +to skills. But is there a cap on this? For example would it be possible for you to max your skill at 20 then get things that give you +10 to all skills or is there some sort of hardcap that caps the benefits of skills at say 25 points or something, even if you have higher?

In general, there is no cap on skills, but there is one noteable exceptions. The Paladin's conviction skill does not gain any benefits past level 25.In .09, some of the Druid's skills did not receive bonuses past level 20, and I am unsure if that has been changed.
Some skills also suffer from diminishing returns at higher levels, so extra points do not become as useful as earlier points.

I think the cap is 99 or something, but you cant get more than level 50 or so with legit equipment. The only skill that I know of that is somehow capped, is Conviction aura. The - % to enemy resist is capped at - 150%. That is at level 25.

IIRC that was the spirits and it's been fixed now.

thegiantturtle and Armor_Biff: the only reason for getting the conviction aura to get higher is to cancel out the other conviction aura (templar vs. templar), but I have a strong guess that you knew this already.
