Why would one player do pit runs as opposed to say, mephisto hell runs? I see people talking about "running the pits last night". What makes this Act1 area so great for Magic-Finding?

Thanks.

On Hell difficulty, bosses can drop the highest-level items. Mephisto can't. Go to this link [URL=http://http://strategy.diabloii.net/news.php?id=551#Area%20Levels] or any of many others like it.

Hmm, I don't know how to make the link "live", sorry.

Despite the Pits being in Act 1, it's actually a lvl 85 area.

Areas like these are sprinkled throughout the acts, and they include (all on Hell difficulty):

Mausoleum
Pit Level 1
Pit Level 2
Maggot Lair Level 3
Ancient Tunnels
Forgotten Temple (In Upper Kurast)
Ruined Fane (In Kurast Causeway)
Disused Reliquary (In Kurast Causeway)
River of Flame
Chaos Sanctuary
The Worldstone Keep Level 1
The Worldstone Keep Level 2
The Worldstone Keep Level 3
Throne of Destruction
The Worldstone Chamber

Edit: rsed , just take away the URL code, and only put the link into the post. This'll auto-format it to make it click-able.

The Worldstone Chamber
If you mention that area, you have to include the Arreat Summit as well (L87, the highest in all of the game). The levels of these areas are insignificant because Baal has his own, fixed mlvl and the Ancients don't drop anything and themselves give just 1 XP each :p

Mephisto has a higher drop rate, which is why people run him in the first place. However (as mentioned by Orphan), in all the level 85 areas he listed, monsters have a chance to drop items that Mephisto cannot. :)

For those not using teleport Mephisto runs can be a bit slow and frustrating, whilst the pits are always a quick sprint from the outer cloister wp to the end of one of the paths. The patterns in the layouts are easily learned and theres no dolls there. Ive seen as many as 5 uniques in pit level 2 alone and the chest drop can be good there too.

Its a great place to run with 0 mf if you're after imbueable and socketable elites.
