Sounds like you have Classic and not LoD. If you want all the new gear runes and such you will have to buy Lord of Distruction.

Buy the Expansion Pack, then log on to B.Net and it will automatically upgrade the version.

Blue Bird's Quick Cold/Fire Sorceress Guide - Built here on the spot! :D
OK, this guide is if you want to build a Sorc has strong Cold spells as well as strong Fire spells. This Sorceress will NOT kill as fast as one that has only specialized in one tree. However, you will be able to take out both Fire and Cold Immunes in Hell, which is an advantage indeed. :)
OK, first let's start with the stats:
Strength - Enough to wear your equipment. And there is really no need to wear any HEAVY equipment, so please try and keep this below 100.
Dexterity - Even less important than Strength. Get it to 75 only if you want to use Wizardspike. You can also invest heavily on this if you want max block.
Vitality - Dump all your remaining points here.
Energy - Well, you won't need anything here, really. But if you must... don't get it higher than 50.
And now for the skills. This is the weirdest part of this build. Before we go into detail, I'll just point this out. Notice how Meteor and Blizzard have LOADS of synergies? Well... look at Fire Wall - NO synergies!!! :D And pretty good damage too! Frozen Orb only has ONE synergie, which is very skill-point handy. So these will be your two main skills.
Cold Tree:
20 points in Ice Bolt
20 points in Frozen Orb
20 points in Cold Mastery
1 point in Shiver Armor
Prerequisites: 5
Fire Tree:
20 points in Fire Wall
1 point in Fire Mastery
1 point in Warmth
Prerequisites: 2
Lightning Tree:
1 point in Teleport
Prerequisites: 1
TOTAL: 92 points
This is level 80 with all the quests done. After this point, you can put more points into Fire Mastery to raise Fire Wall damage.
At skill level 20, you do 1669 - 1700 Fire Wall damage and 366 - 387 Frozen Orb damage (don't worry, it looks low but it's just like this). With +skill equipment, you can boost this quite significantly.
Last, but not least, equipment. Doesn't have to be anything special, although Tal Rasha's wouldn't hurt. But I'll assume you can't get that yet. There are some cheap items out there that give +1 skill, which is what you're aiming for. +1 to skill shields, helmets and armors are the most common. For the weapon, look for Wizardspike Dagger, or an Occulus (Occulus is as good as it gets, really.)
In the end, what you're aiming for is:
Helmet: Shako
Weapon: Occulus
Armor: ANY armor that gives +1 to skills
Shield: Sigon's or Lidless Eye
Gloves: Magefist
Boots: Try and get a 40% run boots - it helps
Belt: Anything with 16 slots
Now this set up gives... 2 + 3 + 1 + 1... 7 extra skill points! :D Which is very nice. Your Fire Wall damage is INSANE at higher levels. At slvl 27 it goes to 3532 - 3574 if you have Fire Mastery. You Orb goes to 507 - 532. Not bad, really.
Now you can just go to Hell and use Fire Wall on Cold Immunes, and Frozen Orb on everything else. Hope this helps. ^_^ Have fun.
Oh and, BTW, here's a mini-guide for skill placement:
Level 1: Ice Bolt
Level 2: Warmth
Level 3: Frozen Armor
Level 4 - 5: Ice Bolt
Level 6: Frost Nova
Level 7: Ice Blast
Level 8 - 11: Ice Bolt
Level 12: Shiver Armor
Level 13 - 16: Ice Bolt
Level 17: Telekenesis
Level 18: Teleport
Level 19: Glacial Spike
Level 20 - 23: Ice Bolt
Level 24: Blizzard <-- Kill Duriel here by using Blizzard + Glacial Spike
Level 25-29: Ice Bolt
Level 30: Frozen Orb <-- YAY!
Level 31: Cold Mastery
Level 32 - 50: Frozen Orb
Remaining Levels: Finishing maxing Ice Bolt, then put one point in Fire Mastery, and start maxing Fire Wall.

Get Vidala's Boots. Or Sigons will do. Just run run run. You COULD also teleport, I guess... :p But that's a lot of mana. You might have to go back to town a couple of times.
If you are going to use Speedwrath's little guide pop one point into static field. Even in hell you can reduce the baddies by half in just a second or two, assuming, that is, you can tank for a bit. If you can use static field it sort of make you a tri-elementalist as static field is lightning. Your hireling will most likely use physical damage giving you four types of damage. That is what my rushing sorc is. Slower but can eventually do it all.

As I have said before, patching it removes his charge attack. Just go on bnet with your 1.00. It will be patched to 1.11 even if you don't have xpac. Anyways, you should get the xpac, since it adds so much more to the game. Classic is a lot harder than xpac. Speaking of patching, the 1.10 patch have some MAJOR changes in the game (which people here take as standard), so any advice we give doesn't necessary apply if you are running 1.00.
have you tryed going to the site and downloading the patch ?
should be able to download it and then update without doing it online if that makes sense
