If there's no +min or +max damage then it works fine.
If it has +x min damage along with the enhanced damage the enhanced damage only applies to your max damage.
If it has +x max damage along with the enhanced damage the enhanced damage only applies to your min damage.
The effect it will have on your overall damage if inserted into a helmet, armor or shield will be less than if it's inserted into a weapon though.
Take a look at the strategy compendium (http://strategy.diabloii.net/news.php?id=551#Weapon%20Damage) for a more thorough explanation.

thnx :)
but what does this exactly mean for my dmg:
+x % Enhanced Damage jewels in weapons enhances the weapon damage directly, but if you place the jewels in armor/shield/helm, the bonus will be added along with stats-bonus and skills.

-If you have more off-weapon ED than on-weapon ED, then you will get more use of the jewel in a weapon
Note: off-weapon ED is all ED from armor, skills, auras, and stat points.

Is this still true?
Also, if I wanted to add a jewel to a helmet to increase a character's or mercenary's physical damage, what would be the best jewel to use?
Thank you,

+30 max dmg jewel is great with aura support and other forms of off-weap ed

I'm assuming this bug has yet to be fixed. I am about to socket four magical damage jewels into Jeweler's (4-socket) armor for my Druid to use (it's for a new dueling league that only allows the use of magical items). What jewels should I use?
It looks like 40%ED/+10 Minimum Damage jewel would be a bad idea. What would you recommend I use to raise my damage as much as possible?
Thank you,

That's only correct if you disregard +min/maxdmg. That kind of damage gets applied to weapon damage, so if you have lots of +min/maxdmg, e.g. from charms, you have to calcutate how much on-weapon %ed it equals to before doing the comparison mentioned above.
In general it's better to add to on-weapon %ed because you will normally have far more off-weapon %ed anyway. For example, a paladin with L25 fanaticism, L25 zeal, a might merc with a L25 aura and 150 strength will have 914%ed off-weapon.
BTW, a Grief phaseblade will effectively have the equivalent of >1000%ed on-weapon because of its massive +dmg, but that case hasn't to be considered because you can't socket runewords anyway.
