View Full Version : Is there a memo or guide explaining resist stacking, etc.
I want to fully understand the mechanics of resist stacking, is there a guide, if not can anyone explain a few things to me.
1) is the idea to first hit 75% on chr, then use the uniques to get like 85, 90 or 95 first before you start the stacking.
By this I mean If I have a chr trying to stack lightning & I use thundergods to get to 85% then use a 160% Shield is it true I can not exceed the 95% until I actually get to 95% then the stacking begins so with this example I could could put 2 Lo's in a shield to hit 95% then it would be better to Put 2 Perf Topaz's in rather then 2 additional Lo's since the cap is 95% and the added Lo's would not work.
2) If I have 75% resist to LR,FR or cold res in general and use all small 11% charms they would do nothing until I hit mainly the 95%, then they would stack?
I am a little lost on this subject in PVP. I do understand the charms would help if the opponent has lots of -% to reduce your original 75%, I think that is right but I have never seen a memo on this subject.
Please help everyone

Resists are capped at 75% for all difficulties which would mean you need 175% resists total for hell, 115% resists total for nightmare, and 75% resists total for normal to hit the cap due to -100, -40, 0 respective penalties.
+Maximum resists raise the cap by that amount, but it does not raise your resists by that much. You will need +resists from other gear to reach your new cap.
The maximum cap that can ever be reached is 95%, no matter how much +maximum resists you have, you cannot exceed that cap. Therefore all +max resists from that point have no effect.
You can stack if you exceed 175% resists in hell without +maximum resists, but the damage is still reduced by 75%. Stacking is not dependant on a cap of 95%. You can stack anytime you exceed your cap. Stacking is only good for opponents who have -resists. Raising your cap is good for reducing the total damage. You can have the maximum cap and stack at the same time but if your resists fall below your maximum cap due to -resists you will not receive the full resists needed to fill the cap.

Stacking resists is important because opponents might use the runeword infinity or a paladin to get Conviction (-150cap PvP) which will seriously hinder your resists and make you extremely susceptible to their attacks. Also, most pure elementalists use items like bramble, griffons, 5/5 facets, which will lower your resists and let them kill you faster.

-250 cold res :)

Ok, so one final question. Assuming hell hode: If you have 75% resist (lets say lightning in hell mode showing on screen) and lets say another player has conv. aura (in general) can you explain the order of the stacking in general for instance if conv = -150% then I would need an additional 150 resist lightning items (charms or in item resists to lightning) before lets say a thundergods would even do me any good raising my resists to 85% or a Lo helm or shield to lets say 95%. and if I have no stacked resists to eliminate the conviction then a thundergod (- the light abs for this assumption) or a Lo'd item would be useless unless I met the conviction amount before the % stacking, etc.
Example (excluding the absorb issue and abs cap)
I am thinking if I stack an additional 150% to lightning (assuming conv = 150%) it will eliminate the conv. aura and therefore keep my resists at 75% then if I slap on a 4 LO shield for the added 20% that is the best I can get there is no need to stack any more resists. Is this sorta the correct idea behind the resists and the 95% cap?
