View Full Version : Open Wounds stacking question

I've looked in the statistics forum FAQ at the useful but doesn't answer my question Open Wounds section and done a rather pointless search using the forum search engine that brought up way too many useless threads, so I am now asking here.

Does Open Wounds stack all at once(1), or just by whatever remainder is left to be affected by the next % chance of Open Wounds(2)?

So
1. 25%OW+25%OW+25%OW = 75% OW
2. 25%OW+25%OW+25%OW = 25%+(25%*75)+(25%*(75*0.75))
= 25%+18.75%+14.0625%
= 57.81...%
= 57% OW (I'm assuming rounding down here)

Thanks in advance for any help you may give regarding this.

Everything is added together for a single shot at Open Wounds. While some say this chance is capped at (insert number here)%, it is not. 100% OW will result in the application of OW for every hit.

Would that mean a barb using dual um'd wizardspikes, gore riders, darculs, and a 10% OW belt, with an inventory of, let's say 37 100 poison damage small charms will inflict OW automatically each hit, AND all that poison damage? And maybe if you put a dream helm on him, he will be able to finish them off with shock?

Open wound will deal almost no damage compared to 37 100 poison small charms. It's only 222 damage per second for lvl80 character over 8 seconds.... And yes, each (successful) hit will trigger open wounds, ever tried malice runeword?

As a general rule, ALWAYS add up the same stats from all your items into one "char stat". Then use that stat for the final use/effect. The games does as far as I know never do stats on a "item by item" case. In fact, when you play the game, and equip items, the game will do exactly such addition for all tyour items and then set this sum as the stats for your character. When you do combat, the game will use this character stats, not looking at individual items. So always add up the various stats on all your items before applying the effect.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I also had an open wounds question. What is the end result of inflicting an open wound? Is it double damage? That Malice Rune Word looks pretty sweet...especially since the Runes used are all low-level, easy-to find ones. Hmmm...wonder how this would play out in a double swing Barb with two 3-socket axes, both with the Malice Rune Word?

What is the end result of inflicting an open wound? Is it double damage? No. It's like poison damage but not quite. You can read about it in the Facts & Formulae (http://strategy.diabloii.net/news.php?id=551#Open%20Wounds) Archive (One of the links in the "DiabloII.Net Links" select box at the top left of this page).

So, then the open wounds damage is reset upon the second hit with an open wounds weapon? At least that's my understanding of how poison works which is why I don't particularly care for it.

The value is reset at all future applications. For PvP, where you might only occasionally hit someone, OW is extremely strong. In PvM, it is most useful for attacks that won't be quickly hitting the same enemy over and over (slow strafe, lightning fury, anything a wearbear does). I, personally, normally don't both with it much.
