Dexterity for a Melee only Spearazon

I'm new to D2. Can anyone tell me what dexterity is used for? Also, does it help at all with melee only characters? Or is it only useful for ranged attack characters?

As much as you need for your spear obviously, considering +stat equipment bonuses

Dexterity is needed to (in no particular order):

1) wear some weapons

2) increase the damage of some weapons

3) increase attack rating

4) increase defense rating

5) increase shield block %

In your case it's just like Omikron said, you'll need just enough dexterity to equip your spear.
