i currently have one of these;
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/GIGABYTE-FX5200-128MB-RAM-8X-AGP-nVIDIA-NEW-69-00_W0QQitemZ8706357277QQcategoryZ70875QQssPageName ZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
but when i play doom3 i experience a slow frame rate..especially in big open places. i have a P4 2.8ghz, 200gb HDD and 1gb of RAM so im guessing a new vid card should fix it
i dont want to spend heaps, so im considering this card;
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/nVIDIA-6600-LE-PCI-Express-Graphics-Video-Card-256MB_W0QQitemZ8709287260QQcategoryZ70874QQrdZ1QQc mdZViewItem
seems to be a few steps above the one i have now, so do you think this will solve my problem? is it much better? :scratch:

Does your mobo have PCI express slots for that card? Seems like a very nice card, especially for the money.
But personally, I'm an ATI guy.

it will be a noticeable upgrade, for sure. you'll probably at least double your framerate over a 5200. however... it's still one of the low-to-mid range cards. it'll handle most games that are out right now at 1024x768 with medium or low quality settings. i wouldn't bet on playing many of the future games...
as far as price/performance goes right now, i think the sapphire x800GTO is one of the best right now, but it's pretty hard to find. and it still costs a lot more than the 6600LE

As has been said before, that card won't work in your current system. Shoot for an X800 AGP card.

Anyonw know anything about the new X1000 series ATI is putting out? The X1600 Pro with 512 MB looks to price around 150-200 dollars and is supposed to be quite the card. It doesn't premiere until Nov. 10, though.
I'm running a Radeon 9800 Pro right now, and want to upgrade.

For the record, I run WoW with a Radeon 9550, 1GB of RAM, and a 1.5GHz processor. I haven't had any problems mixing ATI with WoW, but I know they "recommend" NVIDIA. If you think a top of the line upgrade is too expensive, spring for a middle of the road card. It seems to me too many people get trapped in the all or nothing mentality when it comes to video cards; they either want the best or to just stop playing whatever game they want the card for.
It's like the hot chick at the bar. Sure we'd all like to take her home, but at some point you gotta learn your place and settle for what you can actually get. Mine's half the size of my old one, and twice as powerful. She was a snap to get running too.

Maybe eBay isn't the best place to go? I can find X800 Pro's for $225-ish, and you can probably find them even cheaper than that.

the GT is a much better version than the LE. the LE is the lower end of the 6600 series, the GT is the upper end.

so its worth the extra $100?
yeah, i think so. at those prices... they have roughly the same price/performance ratios, depending on what games you play and what resolution/quality settings you have.

uh...what?
if they are roughly the same - then how is the latter one worth $100 more?

price/performance RATIO is about the same. that means you're paying about 60% more and you'll be getting about 60% more in performance.

Imagine your 160 dollar card has 150 horsepower. Your 260 dollar card will have 240 horsepower. Both car(d)s would be a good buy, it just depends on how much you want to spend.

That one should be considerably better.
I'm running a 6800GT, 2g ram, athlon 4000+, and I have every setting possible cranked to the max on Doom and I get zero lag.
Hopefully your results are at least close.
