View Full Version : Diminishing MF?
Currently, I have 414 MF on my Cold Sorc, and I'm MFing NM and Hell Andy in games with 2-4 other players. Why is it that I keep MFing only Rares and 1 (very crappy) Unique item every 6 or 7 runs? Do I have too much MF, or am I just getting unlucky?
And also, what is this about diminishing MF I heard about?

I find that if you trying to get drop bugs i.e. as if it is first time extra drop such as on diablo in nm (my favourite) you get more rares with low mf but you need some mf to get exceptional type items so i go for 50-100%, with andy think if you getting 3 rares and unique that is about right you just unlucky with uniques you tend to get alot of crap uniques before the good ones in my experience, as there are more undesirable uniques than not.
diminishing Mf is as your mf % increases your actual mf still increases but not by the stated ammount use this site to give you a better idea although these stats are of lod it works pretty much the same in classic

I'd recommend downloading the ATMA utility, even if only for it's dropcalc. It's just :thumbsup: good.

* Uniques: Final MF = (MF*250)/(MF+250) ; cannot exceed 250
* Set Items: Final MF = (MF*500)/(MF+500) ; cannot exceed 500
* Rares: Final MF = (MF*600)/(MF+600) ; cannot exceed 600
You can't go wrong with more MF. The problem comes when you sacrifice killing speed for MF items. As long as you don't think you're slowed down much by sacrificing resists and +skills items for MF items, keep it as high as you can. It's been repeated a million times, here we go again: There is no MF 'magic number' voodoo, just good and bad luck.

Where do I find it?

* Magic: Effective MF = Item MF. Just for completeness :-)
Where do I find it?
In the Single Player Forum (http://forums.diabloii.net/showthread.php?t=330148).
It has some good tools, although it is really meant for single player muling.

Andariel works best with 50-100 MF, meph is better with 200+ MF.
Personally I would go with 200-300MF on a sorc and have 70fcr to get me there, and some resists so I don't die.

Yeah, I'm finding better drops after I lowered my MF. Here's what I use now:
Helm: 3-Sock PTopaz (72 MF) or Tarnhelm (50 MF)
Weapon: Gull (100 MF) or Spectral Shard
Shield: The Ward
Armor: Heavenly Garb
Gloves: Chance Gaurds (31 MF)
Boots: Rare with 30% FR/W, Dual resists (25 MF)
Belt: Goldwrap (30 MF)
Rings: Nagel x 2 (30 and 28 MF)
Amulet: Rare with +1 to Sorc Skills, Mono resist (25 MF)
With 219 to 341 MF on switch, MFing NM CS/Diablo, here's what I've picked up so far in the last 2 days:
Silks of the Victor x 1 - Had it stolen from me while xfering...o well
Goldwrap x 3
Gull x 1
Heavenly Garb x 1
Magefist x 3
Rattlecage x 2
Twitchthroe x 1
Keep in mind that I've never had these kinds of drops with 414 MF while MFing the ENTIRE NM game for almost 2 weeks....not bad, eh?

The Ward is probably my favorite shield for MF sorcs. The resists are perfect, and the str is nice to support using greaves. Nightmare CS is good MF, but you need 200 or so for that IMO. Andariel works best with 50-100 MF though, not quite sure why. I would use twitchthroe over garb though. Garb is extremely overrated and overused, plus the 20 stats from twitch help you wear shard+other gear.
For MF runs, Twitch/shard/ward will help alot. Sure you can do it with 400+ MF, but those 3 items help you to do the runs much faster and still get alot of drops.
Although I like sorcs, I lean towards using a barb to MF, because it takes <5 seconds to get to your objective in a trav run, while it takes alot longer to find meph. MF sorcys are great for hell cs raids/runs with hdin/sorcy tho :)

Yeah, I kinda messed up my Sorc (first character ever, but I've been only playing less than a month) when I dumped some points into Dex and too much into Str (At the time, I didn't know that Twitchthroe existed. FYI, I have 80 Str, 55 Dex, 100 Energy, and rest into Vit.) That's why I could afford to wear items like The Ward and Spectral Shard without Twitch. I was thinking of using Goldskin when I find one simply for the resists.
Also, I used to do Andy and Meph (and for a time, Duriel >.<), but I figured that I was wasting my time trying to get to them when I could just run for Diablo and the portal bosses, rinse and repeat. But I will try just 200 MF and see how that turns out.

Try remaking your sorc, its amazing how a char built perfectly for your gear will work out.
i.e....
51dex for shard, 70 for MF greaves (rare)
(the boots/belt just an example, probably wont have those though)
twitch: 10str 10dex
ward: 10str
boots: 9dex
belt: 20str
51-10-9 = 32 base dex
70-10-10-20 = 30 base str
62 stats saved, thats another 250ish mana or 125 life for you, and this is a big help especially if you're low level

You can't go wrong with more MF.
Actually, you can. The way the game works is that it rolls for unique, then set, then rare, then magical. The more magic find you have, the more likely the roll will be a success.
The problem is that set items comes after uniques but before rares. Most of the time when doing MF I'm not looking for set items. But if a set item is successfully rolled, then the game won't move on to a rare. And I would much rather have a rare item than a set item.
The only time this is a big issue is if you are using the "andy bug" to kill a boss and get an "uber" drop each time. This is usually done by using a character to kill the boss who doesn't have the quest completed in a game where they can't get credit (getting the uber drop each time). Since the uber drop already has a big MF boost in it already, wearing more MF on your character can skew the drop more towards sets and uniques and away from rares.
However, since most item types don't have a set item associated with it (no exceptional set/uniques in classic), it can be hard to tell this is happening. What happens when the game rolls a set item and there is no set item of that type, it will drop a magical item with double durability. So if you like to run act bosses, I would pick up some of the magical items and see if they have double durability (120 vs. 60 on martels, ornates, mage plates, 110 vs. 55 on Grim Scythes and Bec-de-corbins, 50 vs. 25 on lances). If you are seeing lots of double durability items, you might want to decrease your magic find so set items will roll less and you will get more rares. Some people say 0% MF works best for this, though I'm not sure if that is the case.
On the other hand, if the game rolls a unique and no unique item exists for that type - it will drop a rare item with triple durability. This is highly desirable on weapons, especially lances. So if you are looking for good weapon, it may be desirable to pile on the MF to try to get high durability rares. If you are also looking for uniques, pile on the MF - though anyone who does enough MF will end up with plenty of uniques except for the really rare ones like Gull and SOJ.

I have to disagree with that. When I used 414 MF, I had an average of 1 Unq item every CS Run. After dropping it to 341, I started seeing 4 to 5 Unq items, as many as 3 coming from Big D himself (I had a painful choice to make one time on my already stuffed Sorc: with no other people in the game, I killed D, and out drops Magefist, Frostburn, and Heavenly Garb...I could only take one >.<).
