Sorry, but I´ve got a terribly dumb question for you guys. Me and some friends just bought D2 yesterday and are playing it 24/7. Should we buy Lod after we played Diablo or can we get better items with LoD installed off the start? By the way:
What are the advantages of LoD...what´s new in it?
Thank you.

You can convert your characters to LoD so you can still use the same characters, don't worry about being able to find better stuff in the expansion because much of the best stuff is found in later difficuties anyway. You are bound to start a new character sooner or later (I currently have 16 on the go!) so you'll be doing the earlier difficulties in LoD anyway.
What's new:
2 new classes Assassin and Druid (both are quite fun)
Runes (I think...)
Jewels (again, I think these aren't in classic)
More Set and Unique items
Most importanly, you can play in 800x600!
Edit: Are you playing on Battle.net or single player/open/TCP/IP? If you are playing single player head over to the single player forum!

Thanks for answering. Right now, we´re playing LAN but we´ll head on to Battle.Net soon I think. Are there any differences in the gameplay between battle.net and lan except you can´t use your offline-character there?

and charms
AND a whole new act with all new quests. This new act is as big as any of the other two put together.
One reward is being able to socket items, including uniques.
Another reward is +10 to resist all.
I Think LOD makes the game twice as good. At least I"ve had twice the fun since I got it.

Thanks, one more:
Is it possible to DEsocket things?
We couldn´t quite work out how to detach them..

Hel rune + scroll of town portal + item in cube (I'm 99% sure this is it)
This destroys whatever is in the sockets though.
I don't think there is a way in the original.

LoD gives you 2 new characters, a new act with new quests and all new quest rewards, new items, a larger stash, and a larger resolution option. Some of the new items are charms (items that give bonuses for being in your inventory), jewels(magic/rare/unique items that can be socketed into other items), runes(that can be socketed into items), runewords (created by socketed specific combinations of runes into specific items), elite items with more defense/damage, Unique Exceptionals and Elites, and new sets.
It is definitely worth upgrading to LoD.
Online play has a little bit of a different interface than Lan play, but gameplay is the same. Also, online play is split into different realms (USEast, USWest, Europe, and a couple Asia realms). Each realm is split into different areas based on whether you're playing a hardcore or softcore character (whether death is final or not), whether you're playing classic or LoD (you can convert classic characters to LoD, but not the other way), and whether you're playing Ladder or NonLadder (Ladder has a few more items (LoD only) and runewords (LoD only) and has more difficult monsters (both classic and LoD)).
You can play in private Realm games with your friends or create/join public realm games with other players.
[edit] I forgot that LoD has crafted items. You put certain ingredients into your Horadric cube and transmute them into a new item. They're like rare items, except they have a couple fixed attributes (the blood gloves craft always has 1-3% lifesteal on the gloves). There are probably other things I forgot too. Also, if you buy LoD and install it, you can still play classic diablo ii. You can have some classic characters and some LoD characters.

Battle.net is full of idiots, annoying people, hacked items, duped items, and cheats. Whereas if you stay SP and play MP games with nice SP people you won't get all of that.

yes bnet is full of idiots, annoying ppl.
play ladder so u dont have to deal with duped items (i assume there are no hacked items since the last ruststorm except for 08 items but i'm new to those as i've neve seen em before)
cheats? i think bliz will update their patch enough so that ppl will have to reprogram their mhs that it wont come up long enough before another patch.

Yes, but there is also the new quest. You can't do it in SP (or classic, for that matter).
Edit: Good luck "trying" to kill the Ubers!
