whats a best smiter shields from beginning to end?
i've heard eth up'd hoz is better then e exile, but then i hear it the other way around also. any help will be appreciated, i'm thinking of trading my e vortex exile for a sacred e exile, eth up'd hoz, and organ set so i'm unsure if this would affect my smiter as i had the e vortex exile ready for him.

Upped hoz.. resis helps a lot in PvM.

Also, the average damage comes out the same as an evortex. Not to mention you always hit the same damage with hoz... doesn't vary so wildly like a vortex will.

If you can afford grief, then the base damage of your shield makes very little difference when using smite.

That said, I have built a smiter with both HoZ and Exile, both with grief, for the purpose of killing the ubers. It is not difficult to get max res on a pally using either shield. The huge defense bonus from Exile is nice (i get 28k def. on exile pally but only ~12k on HoZ), but more importantly the life tap is what really matters when trying to kill ubers. If you have enough base life and decent resistances, you will not die against the ubers if you have life tap up. A mere 5% chance to cast with dracs is not high enough to ensure that life tap casts before you die; the 20% given by exile+dracs is usually enough to keep you alive. While my HoZ pally could theoretically solo the ubers, it was very difficult to get started killing them and generally ended in many deaths. By comparison, I've soloed the ubers 4 times with my exile pally and died only 3 times. All 3 of these deaths were to mephisto after my life tap was up because i do not have high enough base life from call to arms and/or life charms to survive the massive damage he can do when his strongest attacks land.

In summary, I feel that exile is far better for uber tristram.

I think any elite exile or an upped Hoz will get the job done for ubers. It really depends on your other gear when deciding what shield route you want to go. I use marrows for a charged tap so a NON-eth upped Hoz is what I chose. I like the non-eth upped version better than an ETH for that extra socket space. Not to mention not all eth hoz are created =. I have seen a few upped eth hoz with less defense than my non-eth upped which is at def520.

If you can afford grief, the extra strength it takes to equip upped hoz is not worth a ~10% damage increase vs. regular hoz in my opinion. Versus the ubers, it is important to get as much life as possible so that meph can't 1-hit kill you.
