View Full Version : IK set vs High end gear setup for HCL WW barb?
I had an 88 IK barb, he died, I want to make a new barb. I'd consider my self decently well off money wise with an ist, 6 ums, 2 puls, and some other random stuff. Tons left to trade and a 38 hoto if needed :D So I was deadset on making an IK barb but I was browsing through rikstaker's wonderful WW barb guide again and it was starting to seem like a better idea to pick a weapon and get good overall gear... I'd use full IK +angelics OR
duress (only in a dusk but I could always just make another)
arreats
gore riders
string of ears
not sure what gloves... any suggestions?
angelics ring+ammy and 205/20 raven
weapon: not very sure... rikstaker is making shael shael or ED/IAS jewl'd (if I find some) bonehew look good, especially since I have a 300some %ed one already. What about the OATH rune word? Or any other runewords for that matter that could be made on the new ladder without ebaying or extreme luck? All the weapons that I'd hit the last WWBP with have high dex... I'd like to use a 2H weapon (more damage and I already have 2 chars build around storm shield but no storm shields :p ) so minimum str/dex and maximum life (want at least 4k after BO with prebuff gear)
I assume the standard item setup would be superior to full IK? I guess what I'm asking is, due to my barb noobness (my second one in 1.10/1.11) is, would items or the full set grant me more damage, survivability in HC, life, and overall versitility?

Given you current D2 finacial situation, IK set may be the way to go. Powerfull unique based barbs can get to be quite expensive. However there are a few things I would like to suggest.
As long as this is a pvm whirler, I would not recommend using angelics set for rings and ammy. You don't need a ton of AR in pvm. I would go Maras or highlords for ammy. As far as rings go, use that 205/20 raven + a good rare ring with dual leech. Make sure it has other good mods such as resists and maybe some mf.
Armor: Duress is alright. Just watch your resists. Duress gives a nice 45% in cold but a mere 15% in others. Also, FHR is not important for a whirler. I would rather see you use fort, (ElSolDolLo) none of those runes are very expensive, which gives nice life boost at high lvl + res all and huge ed.
Gloves: Given your budget, I would go with ik gloves. The str and dex on these will allow you to put more points into vita. If you can get your hands on a pair of Dracul's tho, then do so :) otherwise use ik gloves.
Boots: I see gores as more of a pvp boot than pvm. I would use a pair of war travs. The strength boost, mf and added damage are more appealing for pvm than the mods on gores. Remember, the damage on wtravs adds to the base damage of your weapon, so with a good weapon, it could easily add around 150-200 damage.
Weapon: Ok, pick which weapon class you want to use cuz ur gonna have to max out its mastery. I would recommend using a sword. I would not use mauls, as they are too slow even with shaels. If you can get your hands on a 4os sword (I would suggest an balrog blade), then go ahead and make Oath. If not, Doombringer is a good cheap sword you can use.
I will conclude by saying that if you are relatively new to the barb class, full IK is nice (specially for a whirler), for getting a feel for the play style. It is also very kind on the ol' D2 wallet.
Incase you can't read, I'm on LADDER... Want to find me a cheap LO rune? Also, mauls are just as fast as any other weapon if you hit the last WWBP... I know how to play barbs, I've played 2 IK barbs. I'm just not good at gearing unique/runeword barbs up. This char is for PvM ownage. No one PvPs in HC.

Highlords, no melee barb should be without one
If you are desperate for AR use 1-2 ravens and lots of 100+ AR grand charms
Bonehew is a joke in multiplayer solo hell games, find something better
2 handed options?
1) Upgraded Ribcracker
2) Upgraded ethereal Hone Sundan
3) Shael'ed Arloc's Needle
The ideal weapon would be BoTD Ethereal GPA

First of all: I CAN read. As you stated in your first post, you consider yourself "decently well off".
Second: I know plenty of ppl who duel in HC.
Lastly: I do not appreciate the sarcasm in your response to my post. I spent MY time to try and help YOU. Respect is something that is very important to me. If you do not agree with someone, you can still show them respect. It's the mature thing to do. :)

LLD are a battle of who is richer in godly jewels and charms. High level is who can chicken first and who chugs potions faster.

Potions are part of hc, i dont see the point with not drinkin' and dying in a duel just to be fair to the other guy. Trick is to damage the enemy faster (or harder) than the speed he can juv.

Or kill him instantly so that chicken can't activate. This is all i saw when i tried to do LLD in HC.

Do I need to spell it? L A D D E R No forts, no "EBOTDZ" and no enigmas.
What makes the other weapons so poor? I was doing almost 5k WW with IK so I figure doing 6-7k WW with the same speed and add in DS and CB and it would be much more effective, right?
Also, if people duel (high level) on HC why has every single person back out?

You obviously have no clue on what you are talking about...
I refuse to help someone that treats people who offer them help like idiots.
You should listen to the advice of people who know more than you do instead of being a smart#$%.....

Sorry but if you think a Lo rune is "cheap" on hardcore ladder, I know FAR more than you. Tals armor is worth a VEX right now and a shako is a GUL if that tells you anything. There are VERY few uber high runes. I asked for someone who was more knowlegable with barb gear than me to point out the pros and cons of an IK barb vs the gear I listed, not for someone like you to come along and tell me to get a fort and BoTD when a handfull of people (half of which bought the runes off ebay) have those items at most.
Anyway I was doing some gear stuff, hows this sound:
arreats
string
gore rider
soul drainer
duress
high lords
205/20 raven
res all ring
OTAH rune word in an eth balrog blade or feral axe
Which weapon would be better? The only thing I'm concerned about is res in hell, they will be very low. Should I swap the armor for smoke? UM the arreats? Just go IK? :p
I'd appreciate it much if someone who knows what they're talking about AND how expensive the current econemy on HARDCORE LADDER is could help me out here. Just tell me which is better and why, don't tell me to pick different items that can not be obtained for a long time. Thanks :)
By the way, telling me to get something that is near impossible to get is not helping at all. It's being a dumbass.

If you want to use Oath, use the Balrog Blade instead, which will also let you use a shield to get those resists up.

I never said get a botd in my post... (can YOU read?)
Don't say you are "decently well off" if your not. With the trade values you just gave me, you are poor....

That comment shows just how much you know... You want to make a good barb. Making a good barb is expensive. Good items take time to get. If you cannot accept this fact, then it is not us who are morons, but you. Don't whine about how long it's gonna take to get items. Suck it up and go mf. If you don't have a mf sorc, make one. There is no way around expensive items when making a good char. Get used to it and quit complaining.
If you need instant gratification, like most children do, then go IK set. Cuz you are not gonna get it complaining about ppl not telling you which crappy item is better than the other. Sorry. :)

Armyofdarkkness please just stop it, that sounds too silly.
As I have never had an oath bb, I would probably be using one if I could afford it at the moment. But then again IK barbs do seem to be pretty successful, so I think that would be a good choice as well.
Since you can afford that gear, go for it. I don't know if doombringer is as good as IK but if you could get an eth oath balrog blade, you would do perfect. And for pvm, laying on hands should be considered as gloves as well. At least on some certain situations, 350% dmg to demons is pretty high.

Hmm maybe... Could I get by with just mosers (already need 2 SS) and still do more damage than an IK barb?
Considering I just hade a 38 hoto, have 12 or so full mules, and an mf sork (not much time to mf with school now) I wouldn't say I'm poor :| I never specificly stated you in my post. I said "people" I believe and not "armyofdarkkness". You DID tell me to get a fort which is just about as impossible.
Thanks for recommending LoH, forgot about those :D
Could use both high end or Immortal King's set and still do fine in Hell, just a matter of preference and what you have available. But come on, looking all bling gets all the ladies. No doubt. :D
Would someone tell me if this is considered expensive equipment:
283% ED 'Amn' Stormlash
Baranar's Star
IK Helm 2ptopaz
Naj's Light Plate
IK Belt
IK Boots
Chance Guards
Angelic Amulet
Angelic Ring
Rare Ring 105ar 9str 8energy 11%mf
?
Because it is what my lvl 87 HCL MF barb is using to quickly and utterly without risk run Hell Meph, Countess and Pits (in 8p), and he can also quite comfortably solo any area of the game lacking Oblivion Knights.
When people say you need expensive gear to build a good PvM barb, just exactly what do have to be capable of doing outside of what I have listed to be considered good?
with a BotD Ghost spear WW barbs OWN alot of stuff ... check it out and you will see how good it is :)

it for poorest players :) it NOT expencive at all. All this stuff you can get for free from other players or find by yourself during the game.

65% dmg returned as mana by Angelic + Najs combined with a row of mana pots cover any situation nicely.
nalchik, that's just the point. My gear isn't expensive at all, and yet I don't think there is much it can't accomplish that a "good" barb, which according to a previous poster requires expensive gear, can.
Though really, I haven't seen any giveaways of items of the caliber I use, EuHCL simply hasn't become that flooded with items yet...

Fair enough, I just don't like chuggin mana pots too much.

I don't really either, it is usually only necessary against mana burners. Though when I find a way to incorporate ML, I will.
