I just reformatted my laptop and i'm getting a crc (cyclical redundancy error) trying to read the d2char.mpq file. It's an original disc, works on my desk top comp. Is there any way to fix the problem? Tried manually placing the d2char.mpq file in the diablo II folder (networked through from desktop comp because i get the same crc error just trying to manually move the file).

Any suggestions?

A cycle redundancy check failure could also be the fault of the CD-Rom. Have you tried to run a CD-Rom cleaner? Check the data reader inside the CD-Rom too and make sure there's nothing affecting it's movement (you should see it when you open the drive normally, it's the part that slides up and down the tray where the CD goes). Also, make sure the CD-Rom cables are connected properly.

That said, it could still be the CD that's at fault. Some CD-Roms can get pretty fussy, so just because one CD-Rom accepts the CD doesn't mean the other will. Can you get access to another D2 CD, even if it's just to ensure that it's not the CD that's the problem?

If it's a laptop CD-Rom (which, I'm guessing it is, unless you have a different setup) then they're pretty reliable...well, alot more than standard PC's CD-Roms (just my opinion though  ).

Edit: There's also some software that can cause a CRC for some CD-Roms, but I won't go into that here (well, not yet anyway).

I'm pretty sure it's not the cd. I've checked on my desktop and it's fine. Actually, I've had problems with my laptop dvd/cdrw for a while. It will accept some discs while others get the crc error when I try to install a program. The drive is a mat****a (how appropriate) ujda740. Pretty sure the drivers are up to date. I'll try buying a cd cleaner tomorrow.

I DO remember having the same problem the last time I installed D2. I think I just kept clicking "retry" whenever I got the error message until all the bars filled up at the bottom. That took ages though.
