Hi, I have an ES/TK Orb Sorc (Max TK, CM, Ice Bolt, Orb)
I'm curious how much strength you'd suggest for such a sorc in HC? I don't have very good equipment... (and I'm pretty poor :P)
So... what would you recommend and why?

156 total with gear is the absolute maximum u should have (the str req of a monarch for spirit or stormshield)

84 after all +str gear and charms is the highest I would go on this build (for up'd viper). The next item you'd want after that would probably be Travs... but at 41 additional points in strength, I just don't think it's worth it. Shop some low str req res/mf boots, and call it good.
Stormshield on a ES/TK sorc is like putting a dress on a rhino. Might look good but pretty useless. To answer your question no more then mid 80 at worst, though you can get away with low 70s or even less.
Noting the fact that you are " pretty poor" , here is some suggested gear.
Helm: Peasant crown
Armor : Viper
Belt : String of ears or Nightsmoke or good rare with res / life
Gloves : frosties or mages
Shield :whistans
Boots : waterwalks or good rare with res / stats
wand : wiz spike

I'm going to say 110, or ~50.
Upped mosers = 65% block+63 res all (assuming you don't UmUm it ^^) and is a shield well worth going to 100 str for, so pumping str by an extra 10 or so from there isn't going to get you killed, and it leaves you that space for if you get tgods/ss you can equip both with a little help from a >26 str hat or whatever.
If you don't want to use upped mosers in the first place, I tend to stick to ~50... whistans/mage/non-upped viper/etc is all in that general range.
enough str to carry whatever item DUDE.

I don't understand this argument.
Anyway, considering you're pretty poor, I'd have to agree with Full_Circle. 84 after +strength items for up'd viper. Unless you think you'll get an SS someday, 156 after +strength or 133 if you put a hel in it(which I would NOT suggest doing.)
Or if you find one, you can just rebuild.
Really an SS on a sorc is just too stat demanding for its minimal benefits. You need far too much str and dex to make it work leaving very little stats for life / energy.
I used Storms on my sorcs back in 09 but once 1.10 hit I found I had much more sucess using up'd mosers or whistans.

It's not that SS sorcs are necessarily too stat demanding, it's that they're extremely charm dependent. If you don't have a spare Shako and all the charms to get her life and mana up where they need to be, don't bother.
This early in the season I wouldn't bother. A month or so down the road... another story entirely.

If sorks got more life per vitality, I might agree with you.

I found I had much more sucess using up'd mosers
When using tgods the difference in str between an upped mosers and an SS is 10 str, or 20 hp...of course if you're not a tgods kind of person (or have access to SS but not tgods) then the gap starts to look larger, but still only 52 hp.
Oh, and since 75% block is easier with SS than upped mosers those hp gaps are even smaller...
I can agree with the possibility of having more success with whistan's though.

I should have noted that I only used an up'd Mosers if resists were an issue. 9/10 I used a whistans. I still stand by SS on a sorc as a waste especially in a es/tk build that allows you to take more damage

i totally agree with phatty.
really now, the stats you lose from equipping an ss is negligible compared to what you get: safer teleporting with the dr. the wasted stats can be easily remedied with charms, whereas the dr is really hard to replace. the biggest problem of course are getting good charms; most people i know dont farm for charms enough, so they end up with 500/500 life/mana ss sorks >< mine usually go to 800/800 life/mana.

sorcs get 10 life for every 5 points of vitality invested. pretty worthless if you ask me. every sorc i build will wear a ss....period.
last season my sorc had 2800 life........2800!!! that was with 45% dr on top of that. granted i had an inventory full of 20 lifers and a +5 bo cta. if you dont have access to good life charms then maybe you should go with mosers or whistans. even with sub par lifers you should have little trouble getting around 1000 life with ss. well worth it imho. really it comes down to playstyle and personal preferance. i tend to play pretty suicidal with my sorcs (tanking and what not), so the extra dr is totally my bag....baby.
p.s.: sry to disagree with ya mike (stimm), your still my boy!

Maybe it should depend more on your playing style, though I cant really cant base that comment on my own. I was always wreckless with my characters with or without a stormshield. ( just realized Im echoing #2 Mikes post ), but you definitely dont need one to be succesful I still have my season 2 original es/tk sorc - though she may have expired by now and all she used was a whistans; very low budget but still emmensly effective and safe.

You definately do not need an SS to be successful but if I can get my hands on one, I'd surely use it.
Pretty much agree with everything Neuro said, Sorks get a crappy deal when it comes to Vita->Life, so you're not missing out on as much.
