How do you get the nihlathak key?

I haven't done the nihlathak quest in years. All I remember is that you kill a monster, then it explodes, then you die.

Does anyone have tips on how to get the key? What chars and strategy?

Will Nature's peace ring stop the explosions? Should I just make a necro and eat all the corpses?

My hardcore philosophy is:

Make your mistakes in softcore, then go to hardcore.



The Nihlathak's CE isn't quite as bugged as it was before (ie. off screen explosions killed you).:clap: Nature's Peace will help with this, but only with the monsters that YOU kill, not your minions or hirling.

But the big problem now is getting TO Nihlathak. The snakes/vipers down there have a MAJOR bugged poison attack that somehow deals MASSIVE physical damage inside the poison cloud. My first signal of this was watching the health of my javazon's lvl 27 valk and merc die in less than a second, off screen, with a intense buzzing sound as my only clue. I've heard teleporting out of the cloud, or standing still helps, but mercs like to run around.:lol:

I'm not planning on visiting him in hardcore anytime soon.

you can reroll it those viper thingy aren't always there.

Problem is you've still got to find out if they're there.

And you won't find out till you see 'em... or see three other monster types ;)

Use a Cold Sorcy, with a Scythe Insight merc.

Cold shatters corpses = no explosions.

Nil's minions are cold immune

Best bets are leap attack in with a barb (shielded of course for hardcore) and kill him quickly with berserk

I use a strafezon to lead them out then i switch to one point jab titans and rush nihlathak directly

Oh right, that's why again.
Cold immune = you make no corpses. Nihla isn't cold immune.

Or the CM helps.

I forgets - not like I play sorcies (or play at all), so just trying to remember what I read.

ya, iirc nil isnt ci, so use a blizz sorc, worst part is getting down there without the snakes owning you.

I recall that horking the corpses (with Barbarian's Find Item/Find Potion) prevented them from being exploded in 1.09; not sure if this is true in 1.10/1.11. So you could lure the minions out of there, kill them and hork the corpses, then go for Nihlathak. You still had to "be fast, and hit hard" (and drink a lot, my addition) though, because he would spawn minions continuously, then whip them up into suicide minions which would blow up in your face as you are attacking him, and then explode their corpses. You probably don't want that to happen when you are down to half hit points already...

Snakes are apparently only there since 1.10, but don't you encounter them in Glacial Trails also?

The snakes in other areas of act 5 nightmare/hell are the bone spear variety. They also have deadly charge attacks but no stupid poison missile that has 1000-2000 physical damage/second bugged cloud crap.
