Mlvls, Ilvls, and creating a 4 socket crystal sword...

I've just recently made my first foray into the new ladder, and thus have no gear to give my new sorceress. I was looking around various places for good, easy to get items for non-twinked characters, and several people have suggested getting a 4os crystal sword and putting spirit in it. Given that spirit uses low level runes, it seems like a great idea for a no-twink build. The problem is getting that 4os sword. I've snooped around in various places, and I think I know how to create one, but I want to check to make sure I'm not going horribly wrong before I try it.

Supposedly, a crystal sword can have 1-6 sockets. However, the max sockets it will have is limited by its Ilvl, which is equal to the Mlvl of the dropping monster as far as I can tell. Supposedly, the max sockets is 4 for Ilvls 25-40, and the socket quest gives you max sockets for that item type. So, looking at Mlvls for various areas, if I take a crystal sword found in most areas of A4 and 5 normal, larzuk should socket it with 4 sockets. Is this convoluted chain of reasoning right, or is there something I'm missing somewhere?

I'd greatly appreciate a simple answer on this so I can stop worrying. :D

It's mostly correct, as the Ilvl range for 4 socket Crystal Swords is 26 - 40.

i found a crystal sword doing a countess run on nightmare. how do i know if this could be a 4os. its required str is 43, does 5-15 dmg.

If you found it in nightmare Tower Cellar L1-3 and it's not from a boss minion, it will get 4 sockets, else 6. However, Tower L3 is exactly L40, so if I were you, I wouldn't try it if you found it there, on ladder. RTB is most probably correct, but I guess you are short of Larzuk rewards :azn:

Normal cows have an mlvl of 28, which means crystal swords dropped there woul have 4 sockets, yes.

Well now that we know where to easily find a crystal sword that we can add 4 sockets to, what about a shield? I imagine it works the same way?

Not really, no. Of the normal shields, only Monarchs, Aegis and Wards can get 4 sockets. The paladin shields can all get 4 sockets.

For paladin shields, those with an ilvl of 26 or greater will get 4 sockets.

For the other three normal shields, the ilvl is going to need to be 41+ in order to get 4 sockets.

I got a crystal sword from worldstone keep and thought to myself, i know that there is much higher mlvl and ilvl's so this should be good to socket, and i ended up with a 6 socket crys sword. What you are saying is that I should look in normal cows? If i find one in normal cows, should i socket it or just look for one with 4 sockets?

For normal, normal monster mlvls can be seen on the arreat summit. For nightmare and hell, normal monster mlvls = area_level.

Im sorry but I was busy at the time and was hoping that someone would be nice and just tell me since it takes time to do much of anything on my internet connection. I was under the influence that people helped others with information and not tell them to go somewhere else for the information that they already know.

As for post 8 I am under the impression that he means if a socketed crystal sword dropped, it should have 4 sockets, I was asking if I socketed it with larzuk after finding it in normal cows, would he give it 4 sockets. I'll assume that it is the same and he will give it 4 sockets.

People don't memorize all monster level in their head, they look them up on Arreat summit or in ATMA when they need it. So I would say he was helpful.

Yes normal cows have mlvl 28 which is included in the 25-39 range = it will get 4 soc from Larzuk.

Thanks for the table, it keeps me from spending over 15 minutes getting to the actual page that the ilvl's and mlvl's are on on the arreat summit.
