My Compaq optical mouse that I've had for about a year is giving me trouble. When I lift the mouse up off the mousepad the mouse cursor will zoom toward the lower left. This can really screw up my gaming needless to say. Ive tried cleaning it and everything but it still does this. It acts up like this for a while and then it will go back to normal. Its a pretty cheap mouse ( less then 20$ ) and I am thinking about getting a new one. Unless, of course, someone knows what this might be and how to fix it?

What optical mouse brands are long lasting?

That may also be a surface issue.

Logitech mx310 is cheap (30 euro last time I checked), and it's a fine mouse.

That may also be a surface issue.Yes, try many different surfaces. Some mice don't like surfaces which are a bit reflective (even some shiny desktops can confuse them).

I use a Microsoft optical, it's suits me fine but sometimes it goes haywire when the receiver is too far away, try that? Or just buy a new one, mine costs 10 bucks (10 dollars less then the shelf price) because it was the color: Gro0vy 0range, and nobody wanted it.

Thats hilarious, price marked down b/c of color. What's also funny is that a friend of mine got a 15' TV marked down from $159 to $89 b/c its a horrid metallic blue color.

Also, my cursor sometimes zooms to the lower or upper left at will(at very inoppurtune moments). I think it has to do with the wood designs of the desk. Sometimes opticals have troubles with surfaces that contain different colors.

why lift the mouse off the mousepad?

if it's a cordless mouse that's the problem.

a shiny surface will make it go haywire.

i've used a basic corded logitech two-button optical wheel mouse almost every day for at least four years. it works as well as the first day i had it.
