View Full Version : Hiccups?

For some reason, DII tends to "Hiccup" when I play... Just sort of locks up for a few seconds, then speeds for a sec to catch up with itself, then runs fine for awhile, then locks up again. It's the worst on the item screen. Does anyone know what may be causing this?

Are you using DirectDraw, or Direct3D to play the game?

Do you know what, I've had the same thing! I've only really noticed it since 1.11 came out, especially in the past few weeks anyway. Playing the game is fine but if I go shopping with a vendor or go to my stash the game freezes for a split second and I cannot move the mouse pointer. It's not outrageous but enough to make me drop things in the wrong item slots on occasions.

I am in D3D mode and have always played in this way. My machine has had no new software installed, video drivers have not changed and I have not changed any configurations on it.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

btw it's only in D2 that I have this.

DirectDraw. Tried switching over to Direct3D, game froze on me.

This game stutter is quite annoying and happens to me too. I almost sold my hoto once while I was gambling since cursor lagged so badly. I am a bit more careful now.

Not sure when it started, but must've been a few days ago or so. At first I thought it was my computer, but I tried everything and nothing improved. Directdraw mode produced exactly the same stutter.

Fortunately I see other people are complaining too so it's probably a game issue.

so i already posted this in the community forum on someone elses thread, so sorry if im not supposed to post it here, however i see that no one has solved it as of yet so... The stutter problem is driving me crazy. It stutters all the time no matter what i am doing or where my character is, fighting monsters, in the inventory, in the stash, standing still. all the time it will just totally freeze for like 4 seconds. I have tried both video modes, i have tried single and multiplayer modes. So i am at a loss at how to fix this problem. Is there anyone out there that has NOT had this problem?? Is there anyone who has that has permanently fixed it and how??? Thnx if you can help.

This sounds to me like another process is hogging the CPU if you having the same issue when fighting monsters. For me it only happens when shopping or looking my stash.

I would take a look at the processes that load at start up and turn off those that are not necessary. Turn your AV off if you are running any but I would take a peak at the processes. If it occurs constantly leave the game running and switch back to your desktop (alt -tab). Go CTRL-ALT-DEL choose the task manager and have a look at the processes. Click on the CPU column to sort by CPU usage and then take a peak at which process is hogging the CPU.

Also does this occur in all games or just D2? Which OS are you running and is your OS patched? Video drivers up to date etc...

I am at a loss as to why my trade screen hangs.

I've often looked at the list of processes that pops up when you hit CTRL+ALT+DEL, and believe-you-me, it is CONFUSING! How in the heck do you tell which ones are needed and which are not, depite whether or not they're running?

They were confusing on my old puter, where there were at most 15 of them. On my new puter with Windows XP, there are about 50 of them! I've done searches for several of them. The search might even let me figure out which program uses it. But there is STILL no way I can figure out if it's needed or not. And most of them have names that may as well be a foreign language for all they reveal.

Your best bet is to google each process. Unless the process is a wierd one, it'll bring up a brief description and whether it's necessary or not to keep it running.

Edit: For example, searching google with NAVAPSVC.exe tells me that it's related to Norton antivirus, and that it's not a security risk.

I've fixed my problem... just updated my graphics drivers, and hiccups-be-gone!

I too have this problem, but only sometimes. I find closing D2 and opening it again will usually stop it. I am 99.99% sure this has nothing to do with bacground processes, but it is still good to check on the ones you do have running. Also, if you type /fps and watch when this "stash freezing/hiccupping" happens, you will probably notice the fps goes down to zero (at least this happens to me), whereas the ping remains relatively unchanged. That means its not battle.net. Anyway, i try restarting D2, and it usually cures it.

Oops.

Sorry about that.
