Does this happen in single player too, or is it just restricted to battle.net?

Edit: How about if you make a game? Does the system still freeze?

I have the exact (EXACT) same problem. I've contacted tech support but have not heard back. The game always freezes about 5 seconds after I open it, no matter if I move of make a command. I pretty much know whether I am going to be playing or restarting within that time frame.

Are you on Ladder East?

I had heard some people had solved the problem by reinstalling D2, but that only solved the problem for 2 games, then it was back to freezing.

If anyone has experienced this problem and successfully fixed it please post so others can benefit.

yea i am on east ladder. i went to battle.net then linked to open tech support, where there was a thread dedicated to d2 softlock.

the first thing they say is to reinstall, but i cant since i dont know where my d2 cds are. the second thing was to reconfig the windows firewall, which i did and the problem seems to be solved.

hope that helps everyone.

4) installed

5) STILL FREEZING

It only started this week too, i'm going to post in the com forum to see if this is a USEast thing only.

None of you have said whether this same problem occurs in single player. I assume your all having this problem through games on battle.net?

The reason I say this, is because changing the firewall settings, as luckenbach1 mentions, should not have any effect on single player games, though it would possibly fix any lockups during multiplayer games.

Edit: If this doesn't happen in single player, then it's likely that no amounts of uninstallations and reinstallations will fix the problem.

Im playing on USWest nl, im getting this freezon problem. It happens everygame, but the time is random, usually between 10-15 mins though, sometimes straight away.

This doesnt happen on single player...

Ive reinstalled - still happens, how do i change firewall settings, what exactly do i need to change?

This started 2 days ago and is driving me crazy

hey everyone, long time reader first time poster. I actually finally registered because i saw this post, and im also having the same problem  . I checked a few things out and found that -

- it did not only occur on USeast (which i normally play on)
- it did NOT occur in single player, only on bnet
- it also occurs for me also in d2 (without the expansion installed)
- this problem for me only started occuring 2 days ago, where it would happen every 15 minutes or so, now it happens 3 seconds after i create/join a game.
- I have tried what has been suggested in this post and by blizzard in their tech help section, eg re-install, defrag, deleting indexs, disabling windows firewall, but nothing has fixed the problem. I have re-installed it 3 times in the last hour, which has made no difference whatsoever.

It seems I always are one of those unlucky few who "cannot connect" in quite a few games, so i started playing d2 again thinking it would be stable and a bit of fun. Well, it showed me :p

I have the problem too, and I am on Europe Ladder

I never had any problem, until I defeat ancients hell, and wanted to do baalruns, every game I joined after I defeat the Ancients froze within about 5 seconds, I also did everything from defrag, antivirus, removing spyware, reinstalling, still have the problem, after being in the game for 5 seconds it just freezes and I have to reset my PC cause I can't even alt+tab or anything!

is there still no solution to this?

:(

edit:
I think I found the problem, for me anyway, I read something about the direct 3D option being buggy, so I switched to directdraw, and now I dont crash anymore :)

If you have Windows XP, with Internet Service Pack 2, check out http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=adt0816p

If you have another firewall, or a router, check out http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=msi0445p

In your D2 installation directory, there's a file called "D2VidTst.exe", or something similar. Run it, and at the end, select DirectDraw (2D).

switching to directdraw seems to have fixed my problem, hopefully permanently, but i will repost if it begins to happen again

I suggest anyone having this problem tries using directdraw instead

I think everyone is only having the problem on bnet. And I've only experienced it when I create the game myself, instead of joining a public game. And like most people, it only started a couple days ago. Also, I found out from the com forum that this is across all of bnet, not just on USEast.

Ditto, I have successfully opened 5 games in a row which is more than all of yesterday.

Oh and that seems to have fixed my MF problem too, because Meph said "Welcome Back!" with a +34 Vipermagi :)

Where is the installation directory. I remeber I chose this driver or w/e when I installed but I can't reinstall cause I dont have the cd key.

I assume you start the game using a shortcut on your desktop? If so, right-click on that shortcut, and select "Properties". The "target" line in the properties is your installation directory.

By default, I believe the installation directory it's "C:\program files\diablo II\" or something.

I had this same problem start, just as everyone else, 3 or 4 days ago. It was originally happening after 15 minutes or so of gameplay but after the first day or so my machine would lock up after 5 seconds in a game without fail. I tried everything. Switching cd's and cd keys (I am an owner of multiple sets of diablo 2). I reinstalled atleast 6 or 7 times each time changing something. I modified my firewall and router settings but it was none of those. I even went so far as to reformat my harddrive (although it needed it anyway). And you can imagine how disappointed I was to find that after reinstalling and reupdating windows xp for 2 hours diablo still locked up.

The problem was without question Direct3D because as soon as i switched over to DirectDraw the problem disappeared. I am able to join and create games without any problem.

Switching between the two is easy. The diablo 2 video test can be accessed through the diablo 2 folder on your start menu. As soon as the video test finishes just select DirectDraw(2D) and click ok.

After that, you should be good to go.

I've run the vid test from 3 different sources and each time i hit direct draw then try to start my game it still locks up. Is it normal that if I run it once then select direct draw and then run it again it resets back to 3D all over again?? Could it be my sound card.....I'm using soudblaster live?? This is driving me crazy. All those mules and I may have to give em away before they get lost..........luckily i repermed them all about 2 weeks ago.

Yes, it's normal for the video test to always say "3D" after running it. The video test is designed to give you a recommendation at the end. It doesn't tell you what the game is currently set to. So just set it to DirectDraw once, and then start the game.

Since the game locks up when you start it, and not midway through playing, then changing the video option from Direct3D to DirectDraw might not fix it. Can you be abit more specific about when it locks up? Is it during the intro logos, on the title screen or is in after you've selected a character?

I put in my expansion disc and go to options. I run the vid test and select direct draw and hit ok. I can select 1 of my accts and any of my characters just fine but when I either make my own game or join another about 3 to 5 seconds in it just freezes up. control-alt -delete sometimes gets me out of the game otherwise I have to reboot my tower and I hate having to do that. I've both turned off my firewall completely and also ran it with it on but left an exeption for ' Diablo II Open Battle.net '. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail. This is really frustrating, and if I didn't know others were having trouble too I probably would have taken my tower in for a check-up. Hopefully this is a big enough issue that Blizzard can take a look at it.

So you run the Video Test from the CD? You might want to try and just run it from the Diablo 2 Installation Directory (by default, this is usually c:\program files\Diablo II). I don't know where the CD points to, though it looks like it might point to your installation already, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Well thanks anyway Orphan but I think I'm one of the unlucky few who none of the fixes seem to work for. I've been on battle.net too and I think this is a problem between Blizzard and windows xp. So untill they figure it out on their end I will just wait it out and hope for the best. Thanks again for the time u took to try to help not just in this thread but I've seen your name pop up in a lot of other threads dedicated to this issue.

I'm not sure it's a WinXP thing, because I'm running that OS and I don't seem to be having any problems (unless I'm the exception to the rule or something :) )

Since changing to DirectDraw appears to help some people, it seems like a video problem. If you haven't done so already, try to upgrade your video card drivers, and make sure you have the latest DirectX (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx?url=/windows/directx/downloads/) installed on your computer.

Just to confirm, you did download the 1.11 patch from Blizzard's website, right? Also, you never downloaded that fake 1.11 beta patch that was listed up a week or some before the real one came out (it was a scam), right?

Until we learn abit more about this, I can only really offer to first check out http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=adt0324p (it's about general lockups, but I'm not confident it'll address the 1.11 lockup problems, but it's a good start) and then failing that, contact Blizzard through their webform (http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=esi0445p2&msg=1).

While I think that direct 3d is definitely a problem I'm having a seperate lock up problem all together.

About 3 times I've tried starting a paladin and the same issue arises.

I am able to play with the paladin 2 or 3 times with no problem then the next time I try to create/join a game with him I get the loading screen and it stops halfway through. The music gets stuck like a skipping cd and I get an error message that says something like "Problem with line #1634".

I've uninstalled and reinstalled diablo ii and lod 3 times. The latest time I did an entire uninstall (clean out registry entries and everything) ran scandisk and defraged (as per blizzards recommendation). I'm still having the problem

The really bizarre thing is that I also have a lvl 75 ladder necro that I don't have this problem with, just the paladin. Any one else experiencing anything similar?

btw I'm on US East

A little bit of good news I guess.......I've searched on battle.net as well and a temporary fix that works for me is to play in a window format. It's quite laggy and the graphics are off but at least it will let me perm my mules. On the good side of things when I first did this I was running Baal with my mf sorc and a CROWN OF AGES dropped before I even got to the minions. Not much in the way of compensation but it made me smile.
