It happened about 4 times today. In the first time, I was almost finishing the Mephisto quest, as I was about to click the portal to get back from town, the screen froze. I started pressing button combinations to exit into desktop,, I saw some kind of display error, with [memorylocationnumber]x[morememorylocationnumbers].
The 2nd crash, I was in nightmare mode, I was about to exit Rogue Encampment via waypoint, but as soon as I began walking towards it, I crashed. The display error as above, but with a different memory location.
The 3rd crash, I was in nightmare Lut Golein, about to exit via town portal back into the Canyon of the Magi, as soon as I began walking towards it, I crashed. Strangely, when I started presssing key combinations, I didnt exit back to desktop, and my screen just froze there but with the music still playing.
The 4th crash, I was in nightmare Pandemonium Fortress. I was about to exit its front entrance into the Outer Stepps, when I stepped down the first flight of stairs, I crashed, no response from keypresses, same as the 3rd crash.
If you hadn't noticed already, these crashes started always in town.

I just got my 5th crash today. I was back playing a nightmare game after doing several normal runs.
As soon as I got into the game and started moving in town, I froze.

Does anybody know how to completely uninstall Diablo 2?
Windows is notorious for sloppy uninstalls, so using Add/Remove program will just reenact the same crash issue.

You can try and find a registry cleaner. After you do a regular uninstall, you can run the cleaner to make sure everything is gone. But these programs aren't always spyware-free, so you have got to know what you download. As far as I know, this (http://www.registry-cleaner.net) is a safe one, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Alternatively, I would just try and do a reinstall anyway, and see if the crashes persist. You can always do a registry cleanup later on if it didn't work.

It's supported by PCWorld, so I don't believe there's anything wrong with it.
LieutenantDoom, what video mode are you playing on? DirectDraw, Direct3D or Glide?

Only DirectDraw and Direct3D is avalidable to me on the video test screen.
I decided, that maybe there was a error message, that because the game ran full screen, crashed and froze instead of kicking me back to desktop to display it.
So I'm going to run the game in windowed mode by entering this in the shortcut target:
"F:\Program Files\Diablo II\Diablo II.exe" -skiptobnet -w
If you noticed, I reinstalled diablo into my 2nd hard drive partition, F:, because I concluded that perhaps some kind of flawed virus, which I have no idea how I somehow obtained it, is present in the C: partition, and must be attempting to do something to my characters as I play, probably dropping items as I go.
The last two options allows me to skip the intros, and play the game in windowed mode.
I noticed that the game's gamma scale drops significantly, and does not allow me to change it in windowed mode.
When I fight in windowed mode, is everything just smaller, or do I have a lesser line of sight than full-screen 640x480 resolution?
If I remember correctly, the gamma options in Diablo 2 don't work in window mode. The only way to change the gamma when running in the window is through the monitor itself.
So the error hasn't occured yet on this second installation?

I've had a few game freezes in durance 3 as well. It's probably related to d3d mode which I'm using, but it only happens like once/week so I'm not overly concerned. d3d is quite buggy in d2, and you should really try ddraw mode instead.

Finally, someone who knows what I've been going through since yesterday. My Diablo II froze a solid 10 times when I was playing yesterday, and again just about 3 minutes ago today.
The screen just completely freezes, music still playing, but when I click the windows/clt+alt+del combination, nothing happens, except the hand which guides you in the game turns into the computer mouse/cursor. Sometimes it randomly allows me to minimise and shut off Diablo II from Desktop, but it keeps freezing over and over.
I've had it happen to me moving towards the WP in the Rogue Encampment, moving down the steps close to Larzuk in Harrogath, and moving up the wooden gangway leading to Ormus' Temple from Meshif's ship in the Kurast Docks. Before today, I have never had any problems of this nature, although I've played for 6 years.
Any help is appreciated. ^^
Penumbra, are you playing on DirectDraw, or Direct3D? Also, do you have any firewalls?

Orphan, I am a complete IDIOT with computers, so please bare with me. :P I am quite sure I have no firewalls, but let me say: I just did a video test and switched to DirectDraw 2d, not X3d. I noticed that at an exact point where the game would have frozen, 2d Draw stopped it. So far, so good. :)

So do all of you have issues playing in direct 3d?
