I just felt like offering this little bit of info. Not sure how helpful it will be, as most of the posters in here are season veterans of Diablo 2. But I've found a lot of people on my realm asking me for gear/ stat suggestions... I'll put down a few simple ideas here.
1) for most characters, your stats will look like this :
str-as much as you need for gear
dex-as much as you need for gear
vit-everything else
energy-none*
*NOTE: if I were building a sorc, I would most definately pump energy to 150+ ... that's the main gist of stats..
2) great early level items:
Socketed helms and shields! collect those rubies and diamonds! you will be taking things slow as this is early in the ladder, not tanking the whole cs :), so don't worry so much about finding a high % to block shield. Get your resists to max! and a 3 socket ruby helm is a great item, even for endgame gear I've seen some characters use it.
Those crappy sets that you found all the time last season, that you didn't pick up? well, some of them have useful bonuses at low levels.. cathans set can add some str, videla's boots + amy adds some prizm and mf (if I'm not mistaken), angelics is viable for mid-higher levels... sigons for a barb...
use the shops! leave town, check the vendor... repeat. If you really need that 20fcr 50 mana wand for your sorc, or that +2 10fcr scepter for your pally, then keep checking !! I was using a magic wand on my paladin until level 87! I finally found a shard at 88, so don't worry if your using shopped items at a high level. And the vendors can sell GODLY scepters for paladin, +2 10fcr with +3 bh is one that my friends on europe have. They can also sell decent armors/helms/belts. +hps and one resist. It's not the best, but it will work.
Identify those uniques! even I don't have every unique item memorized, and some of them have very useful mods for low levels or if you just don't have anything else to use. Pay attention to them :P
...and finally, the best way to find what you need... QUEST! seriously, I don't find many things MFing or running the same boss over and over, I find the things that I need when I'm fighting my way through the acts. It helps if your a strong character and are in the midst of a battle, as you are closer to the drops :P, but find a nice party that practices some form of drop-sharing, and your good. If you can solo your way through areas, more power to ya. All the drops are yours, but I think it's more fun to play with a party :) I just love the first few days (well...15 hours this season), everyone working together to get hell defeated. Then it's back to Rushing the ladder for me :) and whatever else there is to do.... I'm at work, and should be working, so adios!
