View Full Version : Should I move out?
I have an opportunity to reside in a place inwhich the rent is about a little more than one weeks paycheck. Utilities are not included, and would most likely be 1/3 of the rent during the winter (150/mo +utilities).
In weekly pay I make at least 400 bucks a month, and my tips usually cover gas and some food for the day.

That doesn't make much sense. Do you make about $400 a week or a month?

$150/mo? That sound really darn cheap, is the place habitable at all? And do you live at home now? If so, my advice is to stay at home for as long as you can, and save as much money as possible. Unless you really can't stand being there.
Are you going to have to furnish this new place?
There is furniture there, any that may be gone will be replaced by something I already own.
What I meant about my pay is that my weekly pay adds up to at the very least that amount, per month.
I don't have too many problems with living with my parents.
The main thing is girls + parents house = not fun; anything else is negligable.
edit: Im trying to figure out how much food will cost me. I barely eat one meal a day as it is. I just dont like to eat.
Im also wondering how much of a difference heat will make for utilities in the winter. Especially since I dont require much heat, and would only need the minimum to keep electronics from malfunctioning.

Yeah, but remember, phone, internet, gas, electric, water/sewage all of a sudden get paid by you.

Move out only if you can afford to eat better than Ramen and mac & cheese. And get a better job. $400 a month? That's barely enough to feed me for a month

Excluding phone and internet, that bill was coming to 60-70 dollars a month for them. Meaning 30-35 a person. The rule Ive always been tought around here is that those bills tend to cost almost twice as much in the winter, so perhaps around 50 dollars per person.
Get a better job? Great suggestion, never crossed my mind. Get real.
Either way it was the low end estimate. If I only work 19 hours Ill get 117.66 before taxes and 101.40 after. Welcome to minimum wage, there are no other options.
Im hoping that during the schoolyear i can do about 25 hours a week, which translates to about 129 dollars for me.

I take it you're a waiter from the tips. What else are you able to do that you're willing to? I seem to recall making a decent living doing shipping & receiving in a warehouse... Easier and less stressful than waiting tables

I deliver pizza. Its much worse than waiting tables because of wear/tear on my vehicle.
3 days ago I had to get all 4 tires I had replaced, negating 100% of my saved income.

I think he's suggesting the rent would be lower if you offered the landlord pizza,

Where do you live in your parent's house? You living in the basement suite or on the same floor as them? Here's some options:
- If your parent's place has a basement suite available, see if you can use that. Also check to see if you have your own private entrance. You're really gonna want that if it's available. If there's no suite for you to use, then yeah I'd move out. If you want to bring girls over you need the privacy. Only thing that might be a bit dodgy is when the girls ask you if you live on your own. If you pay rent to your parents, then you do, kinda sorta. I got by with this technique for a few years until I bought my own place. I didn't have any problems bringing girls over, so...you can do something similar if at all possible. When they asked me if I lived on my own, I just said "I rent a basement suite" which is the truth! I never said any more than that.
- $150/month sounds really dirt cheap for rent there. Now I don't know where you live but that sounds incredibly cheap. I'd be lucky if I could find a place between $500-600 rent around where I live. Fortunately I own my own place so the money is going somewhere.
- You said you don't like eating too much. That's actually a good thing because you'll save money in a big way, and keep your expenses down. Check to see if the utilities are covered in the rent, as they might not be. Simple cold won't cause your electronics to die. Maybe if you just left your computer running all the time with the side case off, you could warm yourself up during the winter.
- Yeah I wouldn't worry about too much extra furtniture. The way I did it was, I spent almost all my time in my room. So I didn't need a TV outside in the livingroom or even a couch for that matter. You could save money in so many ways. If you want to watch a DVD, play it from your PC with some DVD software, turn your computer screen towards your bed, turn the lights off, speakers up, and there you go. The girls won't really care that the screen is smaller and the sound might be a tad tinny. And if it's a romantic sorta movie, see...all the better, the settings' just right. And again, this is how I did it.

I spend about $90 every three weeks for myself and I eat 2 meals a day one is always breakfast. If you don't eat hardly anything and if you can live with generic stuff I'd say $100-110 a month.

Tell you gf to get job The Bum and fork up some cash... Gah!
I don't think your ready to move out to be honeset its probably a mistake i assume you want to goto college/unv after and well it ain't cheap. To be honest in job where your job depends on your car full of gas ain't cheap again. What if your car breaks down/problems?

I thank god everyday for living with my parents she makes my lunch for work, diner is always ready when i get home, i dont' pay for sweet home we live in, sometimes they fill up my car with gas, laundry, etc. Even thought i should do this myself, but i'll milk this for everything i can.
I dunno about where you live, but i work for my local city hall we have bylaw you have to have heat connected and the tempeture has to meet a certain number ( i dont' know i'm just co-op student ) and the super/landlord has to maintain it and you have to pay it, and if you stop him from doing it you can get kicked out.

Furniture:
Milk crate = chair
Spool = table
Cinder blocks + 2x lumber = bookshelf/entertainment center
If you get desperate enough, raid the drop-off donation centers. Make a promise to yourself to repay them when you can. You can also find various things like sofas and recliners on the curb on trash day.
Can you tell I was poor once?

I already attend college full time. I did one semester in dorms in another city, then I switched schools and commuted from home.
One thing I didnt consider, with working a lot and going to school a lot, i wont have to do all the things I always do around the house; which frees a lot of time.
So have you decided yet?
I'd like to make plans to attend the first party.

You mean by all the unpleasant chores?
You will be washing your own dishes; sweeping your floor, washing your own clothes, to name just a few.

He'll live. It'll be a shock during the first few months, but it can be done. I've known girls who've gotten by with the bare mimimum of income and were still somehow able to maintain life. Well they told me their secret.
You guys ready?
Budgeting.
I just don't know if being a girl helps in the sense that they were trying to keep their weight down, so the less spent on food the easier things were.

I spend about $200 a month on food. That's just for me ;)
Keep working.
Save up the money.
Then when you are done with collage and working with whatever it is you are in collage to learning how to do.
Then you move away from home.
Buy youself a good quality apartment with atleast 2 rooms + kitchen.
An apartment you could actualy see yourself living in for the next 10 years or so.
The best way is just to skip the 1 room "bachelor pad" with pizza boxes and dirty socks everywhere and just get the real apartment.
Not trying to insinuate anything, but when this question is posed on the internet I tend to find that it is mostly Americans who encourage moving out.
He is giving another friend a couple of days to think about it, that friend is possibly in need of a place to live.
I think I'll do it.
edit: Im not the type to throw parties, ill go to everyone elses though!
