View Full Version : Is my Energy Shield computation in the following examples correct?

I am still at a dilemma on whether to put points in energy shield for my PvP Lightning/TS/ES sorc. This sorc is built primarily for sorc duels, not against other builds especially melee builds like charge paladins or WW barbs.
I thought about it and made a hypothetical comparison using what I "think" is the correct process of how Energy Shield works.
Let's say I am dueling a Fireball sorc in hell mode and all my resists are ZERO. That means I'm taking full damage if the fireball casted rolls 100% damage. The fire sorc's fireball does 10K damage. Please advice if my computation/assumption about ES and how it relates to damage absoprtion is correct in the following 3 scenarios:
Example 1
Fireball damage at 10000
ES L25 80% DR: (x.02) = 2000 FB Damage
Mana is 2000 / Life is 1000 = 0 Mana left, 1000 Life left
Example 2
fireball damage at 10000
ES L40 95% DR: (.05) = 500 FB Damage
Mana is 2000 / Life is 1000 = 1500 Mana Left, 1000 Life Left
Example
Fireball damage at 10000
No ES = 10000 damage
Mana is 0 / Life is 3000 = -7000 life = DEAD
Based on those examples, if I didn't have ES I would die instantly, correct?
So I am wondering if my computation is correct or if it seems like I'm way off track.
Thanks in advance for your inputs.

i believe res is applied after es so its like
6k fire ball dmg hits 1/6 pvp penalty 1000dmg
50% es -500 life -500 mana
apply res on the each 500 attack so if it 0 res it would do the full listed 500 dmg.
this is number frienldly math example.
another example
1000 life/2000mana sorc 0 res 0 dr 0 mdr lvl 16 telek.
16k Fireball Hits
Apply Penalty 1/6
2667 ( round up )
You Have 75% es ( average es )
2667 x .75 = 2000 dmg goes to manna and 667 dmg goes to life Before applying resist.
you would 0 mana thus make your es fail, and still 323 life left.

Thanks for the response.
So going by your example,
1000 life/2000mana sorc 0 res 0 dr 0 mdr lvl 40 ES..
16k Fireball Hits
Apply Penalty 1/6
2667 ( round up )
You Have 95% ES ( average es )
2667 x .05 = 133 dmg goes to mana and 0 dmg goes to life Before applying resist.
If this is the case then the answer is obvious now. I will dump all my points in mana then, or do a 4 mana/1 life split per level. I couldn't believe though that a 16K FB will only do that much damage. I've dueled some FB sorcs that killed me in less than 5 fireballs.

I think it's 95% of 2667 (which is 2534) goes to ES, which takes off mana depending on ur TK. 5% of 2667 (133) tries to go to your life. You apply resistances to this before it actually takes ur life away.
Check the stickies to see how ES works. I just build an orb/ES sorc so I've been doing a lot of reading there. It's been YEARS since I did a ES shield and I've been really happy with it. I can now teleport without drinking blues like mad (since I actually put pts into energy) and my merc with Insight keeps my blue very full :D

no 133 dmg goes life and 2534 goes to mana and with lvl 20 telek its only 1900 mana lost ( 2534 x .75 )
why base vita is always enough aslong as you maintain a decent es percent.
any other life is nice what you don't want to happen is have mana and es still up when you die.
