View Full Version : Noob questions from someone new to sorc.
:howdy: everyone. Please help a new fellow sorc.
1: Does thorns work any good with ES?
2:And static field. When I place it, I do'nt see anything happen. How do you tell that it is working?
3:Many say that it "removes" half of the monsters life, but the description says only 25%. I do'nt get this skill
Thanx for your time
With static, you need to be RIGHT up against the monster.
and a couple of clicks reduces the monsters health dramatically.
Unfortunately thats the only answer I can give. I was confused as to its use at first as well... you get used to trying to tele in, static a couple of times, and tele out again without dying.

Static field removes a % of the monster's current life, but has a limit to how low it will bring a monster in nightmare and hell. In NM, it won't bring a monster lower than 1/3rd HP, and in hell no less than 1/2. Lightning resistance also affects how much damage it will do per cast, and it will not work on lit immunes. More skill lvls in static will only increase the range, so you don't have to be looking up a monster's butt to hurt it. +skills items and only 1 hard point are usually more than enough for static.
I don't know about the eshield/thorns thing, although it's a good question.
So every click reduces hp by 25%? Does it have a duration? And is the field on the monster or on the ground (if monster moves, will he still be staticked)
Is there anything visual that tells me if I succeeded?
Is 50% the cap?
And by RIGHT up, do you mean only effect in melee distance or so?
Does it work if you use lower resist to break LI?
It seems like many questions are needed
Some explaining screenshots or a link to a very focused guide would be nice .....
So every click reduces hp by 25%? Does it have a duration? And is the field on the monster or on the ground (if monster moves, will he still be staticked)It reduces hp with 25% of its current value (i.e. you can't kill it with 4 Statics), but must be modified with your opponent's lightning resistance. E.g. if the monster has 1000 hp and 20% lightning resistance, your first Static will take 1000 * 0.25 * 0.8 = 200 hp. Your next Static will take 800 * 0.25 * 0.8 = 160 hp.
If I recall correctly, it's less effective vs bosses and in pvp - I think it's half as effective.
Is there anything visual that tells me if I succeeded?
Yes, there's a lightning animation on affected monsters, and you'll see their health dropping fast if you keep on Static'ing.
Is 50% the cap?I Hell it is, in Nightmare it's 33%, in Normal there's no cap.
And by RIGHT up, do you mean only effect in melee distance or so?It depends on your Static level. If you have level 1, you need to be in melee range.
Does it work if you use lower resist to break LI?Yes.

Forget those questions. they were answered when I was posting again :uhhuh:
Man, there it happened again.
Thanx for quick answers. No, what about thorns?

I think thorns can only be used effectively by a necro. Why do you want to use thorns for your sorc? You don't want getting hit, especially melee hits. Even if you can theoretically throw back some a good deal of damage to your opponent, your sorc will die when you get swarmed by almost any creature in hell mode. You'd rather want to stay away from creatures and not be close to them, unless of course, you're building a melee sorc that might be another story. You probably already know that thorns no longer work in PvP correct, if that's what you were planning?

it will work, but not well. it reflects actual damage taken, so just like damage taken goes to mana or absorbs, it's not worth the return for an es sorc.
best bet if that's the build you are going for would be attacker takes damage.
Eh? Absorb +x works pretty well with ES...

Are there really items with absorb +x? I've heard them mentioned before, but I can't remember seeing it on anything. I suppose they're applied after eshield and before mdr/pdr? % absorb is not very helpful with eshield on, but it can be good to have if you're using eshield as a first line of defense, rather than your only defense...of course, in that case, you need max resistances too.
On the topic of static, you could take away 50% of an enemy's life with a single cast, if you can get their lit res down to -100 with -enemy res and/or conviction...

yes, absorb works with eshield, but if es is done correctly (including pdr/mdr) hardly anything gets through to be absorbed.
imho, absorb works better with a weaker es.
Thank you guys. Thats all I need.
Seriously, I were'nt planning a "thorns sorceress", but I consider all correct information as useful. If there's something I'm wondering, I ask. I've heard of energy-sorc who can tank really well, and I happen to have a bramble around...
Hmm, I suppose, I've never actually bothered to get a 95%ES or anything.
If you want absorb +x, you can get it with Thundergod's Vigor, Rising Sun, Nightwing's Veil, Snowclash, and Crescent Moon runeword. There's perhaps a bunch more, that's just from memory.

adding to what liliel said: there are items that add absorb +x and others that add absorb +x%. that's a big difference, especially for an ES sorc. you want items that do not give the percentage, as the goal is to block all damage, not part of it.
that being said, there are items that give magic absorb +x that, imho, are godly for a sorc, which include spirit shields/weapons, oath weapons, and crescent moon weapons. with a spirit shield, my dwarf star now heals me.
