It should be noted that it isn't strictly wrong to refer to either of them as vegetables because in cooking they are used as vegetables, just by the scientific meaning of the word fruit they are fruit... ie cucumbers are the fruit of the cucumber plant (whatever that may be) in the same way apples are the fruit of the apple tree.

1) Bananas are berries (a sub-group of fruit) that do not grow on trees, but on high plants
2) Cucumbers and tomatoes are fruits, as they are part of the plants' reproductive system, vegetables are defined (in the biological sense) as stuff that are not (i.e. lettuce, carrots etc). Furthermore, cucumbers are also berries. As a note, the apple is about 50% fruit (the inner part) and 50% vegetable (the outer part). And strawberry is a nut (the seeds) vegetable (the red stuff) combo,
3) Kiwi the fruit (berry) is named after a furry bird that look just like it. Hence the Kiwis (the people) ar named after a furry, flightless bird
4) there is no such thing as american beer (ok, i dont have scientific proof of this one, just feel so...right)
