Amazing guitar player but IMO the best is Joe Satriani. He has taught so many of the best and/or well know players in the world.

Steve Vai is the best. John Petrucci and Yngwie Malmstein are pretty close too.

I think it really depends on what "best" means. There's just too many styles of playing a guitar that define a good guitarist. I mean, for blues, B.B. King is definetely one of the best. But can you picture B.B. King and Lucille playing a Megadeth solo? Probably not. So it really depends on what "best" means...

On a side note this is something I recorded last year:

masterazn's awesome solo thing (http://www.soracs-door.com/media/bz-solo.mp3)

While there are some amazing Jazz guitarists, I like John Mclaughlin and Al DiMiola for example, I still think Satriani is the best.

Stevie Ray Vaughan without a doubt.

One of my personal favorite guitarists within a band is Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Paige.

Jimmy page would be up there for all time best, for current i'd go Yngwie Malmstein as well, i swear he was a 3rd hand at times, doing what he can do with 2 hands is impossible.

I would probably say Hendrix or Vaughn, but if we are including bass players then I would say Cliff Burton.

HE also has the biggest ego in the world and is not all that great. The recent G3 tour showed that as Satriani and Vai left him in their dust.

Yes, he has a pretty big ego, but i consider him to be one of the best guiatrists ever. Of course, everyone likes different things, and styles change all the time. Satriani would also rate very high in my list.

This thread can really go either way on who is "the best" guitarist in the world. Every single guitar player here is basically just a soloist. Sure, they are in bands, but their bands aren't even as famous as they are. It's basically an opinion, not an actually fact thread.

Every single guitar player named here is amazing, just people enjoy listening to others more.

I thought this was the best guitar player in the world right now, that's why I didn't say Hendrix. But I agree that Cliff Burton is one of the greatest bass players.

you people forget jimi hendrix.
Eddie van Halen and Zakk Wylde are pretty good, also the young guy alexi laiho is told to have great potential, he's already really good

It really depends on the genre and what style of music turns your crank. Just because someone like Hendrix can lay out some long solo licks, doesn't mean he is best. Some of the best guitarists I have heard aren't rock guitarists and, in my opinion, put rock guitarists shame. Phil Keagy is one of the best I have ever heard, Chet Atkins and some of the Classical/Flamenco guitarists are unbelievable with what they can do.

okay since i agree that there isn't such a thing as a best guitar player in the world lets change the question a little bit. who is your favorite guitar player. it is true that it depends on the persons interests in music. some will say its jimmy others satriani...its a vicious cycle as a friend of mine says. ;)

Joe Satriani is very very good, and never screws up. He said in an interview that when he is going off on a solo, he just gets possessed and doesn't even know what he's doing. He is so in the zone that when its over he doesn't realize what just happened... but it ended up being awesome. THATS's a good guitarist.

I honestly don't see what everyone likes about jimi hendrix. All it is is semi-difficult guitar riffs that anyone with experience can do... recorded horribly so it sounds bad. People think that just because he was the first who utilized distortion and gain to make music means he is an awesome guitarist... but he wasn't really that good compared to today's guitar experts.

Yeah, where does that guy come off acting like he was a good guitarist when he only made noises it tool other musicians an additiona 30 years of time and technological advances to copy?

If you want to hear Jimi go off with astounding technical skills, go listen to his blues album. He knew what made guitar music great decades before he came on the scene and he made music the likes of which wouldn't be made for years after his death.

i understand that he is the leading innovater for modern guitar sounds. He was revolutionary, true. But i'm saying as far as musical mechanics, finger precision, and general wailing 1337-ness, he couldn't do things like joe satriani and others. Amp sound not an issue, consider the two sitting next to each other with unplugged electric guitars, joe would pwn4g3 him.

Yeah Im more of a rock guy myself (modern or classic) and either hendrix's or vaughan's version of Voodoo Child just make ya feel like a badass. Not that that is the most hardcore guitar solo in existence, which its not, it just speaks to you.
