Yes they can. After installing LoD, you'll have the option of converting your existing characters when you select them on the character screen.

Note that it's a one way process. You can't convert a LoD character back to Classic.

And Note: There is a good chance that your goodly classic char will be mostly useless in LoD. At least you'll have to change most items.
