a socket question

i used the quest in act 5 quest 1 to socket my shako but as i was moving some stuff around my stash i accidentally put a perf ruby into my shako and i was wondering if i can remove it so i can put something else into it plz...?

This is correct. Whatever socketed in the item (in this case a P ruby) would be destroyed

I now religiously keep my important socketable items on the left side of my stash and gems runes and jewels on the rightside. :)

Yes, you can. You need a Hel rune and a scroll of Town portal (and naturally, that handy Horadric Cube). Place shako in the cube with said ingredients, hit transmute, and voila! This will destroy the ruby and there's no getting around that but hey, now your shako has its socket free once more to do with as you please.
