Hi, this is the thread for cool, useful vocab words. Basically just post vocabulary words, that more or less meet the following criteria:

-English
-Common enough to be seen in an adult reading level novel
-Uncommon enough to not be seen in every day life (not including reading adult reading level novels)
-Useful, in the sense that you can easily use in in everyday life to impress girls.

Too many words; they are my playthings. But let's see...

Venerable.

Always makes me think of a wise, honorable old Native American, or an ancient guru-dude high on a mountaintop, or a Gandalf-ish type wizardly fellow.

I wonder where azn got the idea for this one.

I just learned a cool word last night. "Feral" it means basically the same thing as wild. In the "not tame" sense.

we use that word alot around here, in the rural areas anyway, to refer to wild cats. "feral cats" :p generally it is a cat that USED TO BE a pet and was dropped off in the woods or such and basically became wild again. or just plain wild cat to begin with. *(but, really! did they not all used to be wild anyway? go figure huh!!)

Esoteric. Not everyone knows this word, and some will say "as in esoteric drink?"

I'd recommend Dictionary.com Word of the Day (http://dictionary.reference.com/wordoftheday/) for daily serving of new words. Good stuff.

callow makes me think of that Mallrats line. "It means shallow and weak willed. Really? I thought that was the only complimentary part of the letter." hah.

Anyway, some of my favorites are: Surreptitious, entrenched, engendered, and meritorious.

Here's a great one, too new to be in the dictionaries. It's been making the academic journal rounds for a couple years now, though. I've even used it in my own writing a few times.

historiosophy: system of rules or suppositions about how human history advances, and to what end. i.e. one's philosophy of history.

example: His Marxist historiosophy was the backbone of his strong belief in human progress.

"Quixotic" as in (don) quixote?? sweet play on words huh, kinda says alot about the english language when we create new words based on fictional characters. :D i dont think i ever read that novel, but the definition looks like it is derived from "quixote". was he nuts or what?

:) You are correct. But what i find interesting is we say it quik-sotic were as you say don quixote very differently.

Don quixote believed he was a knight in shining armor, so to say. But in reality he was just a feeble old man with an active imagination.
