View Full Version : Starting anew with a bone necro...

So, I'm starting again as a pure bone necro. Any ideas what I should be looking out for item-wise? Should I go for block or lots of vitality? What items? I'm assuming Wizardspike is a given.
EDIT:
A 'Spirit' seems great, but the problem is it requires four sockets. The "lowest" non-Paladin shield is a Monarch. Is 156 Str worth getting?
+2 To All Skills
+25-35% Faster Cast Rate (varies)
+55% Faster Hit Recovery
+250 Defense Vs. Missile
+22 To Vitality
+89-112 To Mana (varies)
Cold Resist +35%
Lightning Resist +35%
Poison Resist +35%
+3-8 Magic Absorb (varies)
Attacker Takes Damage of 14
Is this char for pvm, pk or pvp?
If it's for pvm, think again. Everyone thinks you as a tppk'er, and bone necros suck in pvm anyway. :)

WTF? Bone necro's suck for PvM? When did that happen?
What do you reccomend for a character with zero items?
Spirit shield belongs in the same class as lidless. The block % is terrible , the str req is butal all for +1 skill.
To original question. prepare to play solo your entire career if you playa bone necro. As it was said everyone will think you are a tppk. But if you are set on a bone necro and not really sure what gear is available to you so ill try and keep it to pgem - UM for price.
Helm - p crown or shako
Armor - Viper
Belt tals / nightsmoke / sw sash
Rings - raven frost and rare mana / fcr ring
amulet - any good rare or crafted
Boots - marrows - if you dont know about marrow bug research it
gloves - trangs or mages or frosties
wand - wiz spike / carrin shard / suicide branch / boneshade lich wand
shield - homon

OK, I'll try. Does BSpirit/BSpear work nicely for MF'ing?
What character do you reccomend?

I second what Stimm said for gear.
I second what they both said about playing solo. It's not that it's impossible to get games it's just that it's much farther from consistent than many would prefer.
As for "suck at pvm" that's a lie. Easy to do solo baal walks. Easy to do pindles. Easy to solo your way through to hell baals. Easy to do CS. Etc, etc. Basically *ANYTHING* with the word solo attached is a breeze to any necro with CE, and with good BS the corpses drop quite quickly.
Do note that they DO "suck" at being uber-8 player-throne clearing machines like blizzard/LF, but that's because those skills are broken. Both spear and spirit can kill fine in 8 player games, just not as fast as those two builds.
Incase you're unaware you want either 75% or 125% fcr. If you can hit 75% with a White wand and at the same time fail to hit 125% with a Wizard Spike then go for White (assuming you don't need the resists).
Also, Dim Vision is your best friend. Mercs that cast curses that override your Dim Vision are your worst enemy.

156 Strength might not be worth a lidless but at +25-35% FCR, 55% FHR, +2 all, and rune resists to poison, lightning, and fire I'd say it's worthwile making it happen.

Almost what I meant with "sucking" at pvm. However, I find your view very optimistic. Bone necro needs good gear, I've tested my friend's char in scl, which had _the best possible gear_, and I still had to work for the kills.

the FCR on spirit doesnt usually free up a gear slot if you are going for casting bps. Id rather use wiz and mages and a rare ring and save myself about 100 stats when you factor in str req and dex req for block. But i tend to play a little more towards survivabilty since i dont use chicken like most hc pretenders

All I'm saying is that if you're aiming for an Enigma, you should plan on Spirit as well. I wouldn't advise bothering with block reqs for a bonemancer. Good resists, high FHR, Bone Armor, and decent cursing skills will get you through the game without a high block.

Anything but Bone Necro

Except the obvious issues (not being allowed in a lot of games unless they know me), what's so bad about them?
Plus, I would like a specific build that you do reccomend...

NOTHING is wrong with bonecros provided you can get the gear listed by Stimm, most specifically the Marrows and the Wizzy. As for the block question, it doesn't really matter. Marrow bug will net you like 1000 point bone armour which will rarely break so long as you're not an idiot trying to tank frenzytaurs or something. On the other hand, unlike most characters, so long as you're using Dim Vision effectively casters will rarely hit you either. It basically leaves you in a situation where you don't need the life to survive icky things like gloams and you don't need the block to survive the other icky things like frenzytaurs. I think the general consensus is if you have a homunc block, else don't.
All I'm saying is that if you're aiming for an Enigma
Who's aiming for an Enigma in this thread though? ^^

Is going for a Spirit shield worth it then? Or just homo?

The two best builds probably for someone with zero items are summon necro and a lightning trapper assasin. If you dont have marrows to regardless of the other items, a bone necro is not even worth getting really. The bug is really what makes them viable to begin with. I made an untwinked lightning trapper and he was a lot of fun. You can buy the claws you need at anya, and make a lore helm and you get fade for resists and some claw block. Summon necro gets a bit tedious but a lightning trapper works very well for someone with no gear and can really tear non li's apart. I would start with that first to run pindle, shenk, eldritch, and maybe some cows and then build up your item base to make a boner or something else if you want

I'm thinking of making a Javazon... My old java pretty much chewed Shenk Hell ;-)

bone necs aren't that bad, although they do suffer from the "one spell syndrome"
getting through normal is going to be an absolute pain let me tell you. if you don't find a party soon, i doubt you can kill even norm mephisto. your mana pool simply can't handle killing a high hp monster. and your bspear won't even be that good, yet.
if you ever get to nightmare though, that's where the fun starts. i'm positively certain that you can get a spirit sword by then, so most of your problems are over. most, but not all.
i don't think it is possible to do hell without two of these: wizzy, marrows, spirit sword, (insane amount of) skillers. the reason for that is you have to have two in order for you to deal hell-ish damage while maintaining good mana. heck, even my old nec with wiz/shako/marrows/homo/frosties/arach ran out of mana after 3-4 monster groups, at lvl 90.
but, IF you ever manage to get two of those, preferably with a homonculus, then this character is probably the second safest character in the game. you have 2 tanks, a close to 1k bone armor, dim vision, decrepify, and holy freeze-all the while spamming 2.5k-3k magic damage.
hope this helps.
ps: spirit shield (156 str req) aint worth it. even a cheap homonculus beats it (and you can easily trade for it with nm-mf-able items.
pps: here was my build last season (without spirit)
lvl 90 when i retired him, forgot his name (!)
1 summon resist and all prereqs
1 decrepify and all prereqs
20 teeth
20 bone wall
20 bone spear
20 bone spirit
rest in dim vision (this should be around 5 before you start maxing the last spear synergy, for duration purposes)
shako (ptopaz)
maras (23)
skullders (ptopaz)
marrows
bahamuts ring
rare ring with 10 fcr and mana
wizardspike (clean)
arachnid mesh
frostburns
4 pnb gcs
1 annihilus (forgot stats, but enough to max res)
around 1k mana, 1k life (sorry if this isnt accurate, this was a long time ago)
max res all in hell
used him for solo baal walks and hell trav
found absolutely nothing, but he was good times
let a friend kill him because the ladder ended
