View Full Version : Odd Error
Ok, this has happened every time I've tried to start up D2 since I got my new HDD and CD Drive. When I go to open Diablo II it takes for-god-damned-ever to load then gives me an error that says, "Unable to authenticate original disc within time limit" then gives me the option to Retry or Cancel.
If I click retry, it runs with no trouble. But it's just annoying to go through that every single time.
Any ideas?

What operating system do you have? Have you tried a fresh re-install of the game? (though, you mention you got a new HDD, so you probably did).

I use Windows XP, and it wasn't a new Master HDD. I was operating on a 14 gig HDD before, so I bought a new one to toss in as a slave drive so I could toss my various *cough* downloads on there. As well as multiple things for college.
So DII is in it's original install directory. I haven't tried a re-install because I dare not try to find the install discs from the plothera of boxes since I just got done moving.
Hmm, is it possible to get access to your D2 Classic CD, so you can try to load up the game in classic mode? The reason I'm asking this is I think it would be interesting to know if it goes through the same process (asking you to retry). I think it's safe to assume your expansion CD doesn't have any scratchs? :)
On that note, do you have more than on CD drive in your computer (ie a burner or something) as well? If so, try to use the CD through that and see if theres any difference.
From here, I'm going to just list general suggestions that you might want to try to solve the problem (mostly it seems like a problem with your new CD-Rom). The reasons being that I've never seen your error message before, and blizzard doesn't offer any suggestions. Sorry in advance for the long post :D
- I'll start by saying it might be as simple as the CD needs to be cleaned. You should probably try this before anything mentioned below, because if this works, and it wasn't tried first, both of us might look pretty stupid :D. If you've already tried this, then ignore what I just said.
- Make sure you have the latest firmware updates for your new CD-Rom. You'll need to check out the manufacturers website for this.
- Are you running the game in any compatibilities mode? (Right-click on Diablo II.exe, and select the compatibility tab). I've heard of situations where using the compatibility option can cause problems.
- Does running the game in window'd mode still prompt you with the error? (add -w at the end of your shortcut target)
- You may want to check to make sure the "DMA if available" is set on your IDE controllers (http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=mdt0404p)
- One of the solutions offered by Blizzard is to adjust the sound hardware acceleration, by going to start --> run --> Dxdiag, clicking on the Sound tab and changing the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level to "Full Acceleration". If that doesn't work, try taking it down a notch and running the game again.
- I know that certain programs can interfere with the game. Although I'm sure you've tried this already, make sure no other unnecessary programs are running at the same time. Apparently, older versions of Zone Alarm can cause the game to not start, and Kazaa/Kazaa lite can conflict with the computers ability to read CD's correctly. Additionally, Viewpoint Media Player can also prevent the game from running. If you have any of the above programs, you should probably try to disable them (or uninstall them) and possibly even uninstall and re-install the game again.
- Are you running the game in DirectDraw or Direct3D mode? If it's Direct3D, you might want to try running it in DirectDraw (2D) mode by running the D2VidTest in the installation directory (although this is a longshot).
- Finally, you might want to copy some of the MPQ files off the CD, and put them in your D2 directory. This should reduce the amount of time spent accessing your CD-Rom (as this sounds like the problem here). The files that I know you can copy off are D2Music.MPQ and D2CHAR.MPQ. D2Music.MPQ can be found on the expansion CD and the classic Diablo Play Disk, but I think that D2Char.mpq can only be found on the play disk of the classic game.
If your going to do the above method, I would recommend uninstalling the game completely, and then re-installing Classic Diablo. After thats done, copy off both D2Music.MPQ and D2CHAR.MPQ from the Play CD, and put them in your directory (make sure neither are read-only). Once you've done that, install the expansion.
Note: Have you tried any other games that require you to put in a CD? Is Diablo the only game that it has trouble with?
Best of luck
I've officially found my problem.
Ok, before this new CD Drive, my old one had blown out. So I was desperately trying to find a No CD Crack so I could get my fix. Sadly I found out after installing one, that you needed files from the CD. Frustrated me just closed out of the Diablo II directory without removing any of the loader info.
Whatever was installed from that is what was screwing me up.
Works just fine now. :D
Thanks for your help though!
Nice. Good work
I guess it's just another reason for other people not to use hacks or illegal third party programs
Edit: I'm not sure if anyones told you, but you might want to re-upload your avatar, as it seems abit scrambled.

Yeah.
And I know about my avatar, I've been so busy moving and whatnot I just haven't had the time to find it and reupload it. Thinking about a new one anyways. Since I had that one since I joined the forums a couple years back.
