View Full Version : D2 keeps minimizing itself, what do I do?

I posted this on another forum and I'm not sure if that was the right one.

Recently, whenever I try to play d2 it minimizes itself. What I mean is this is what happens:
1. I load d2 up
2. It starts up but the intro is messed up. You can see bits of the blizzard logo, as well as parts of the desktop.
3. I alt tab out of it to minimize it so that it goes back on to the desktop. I click back onto d2 and the screen goes black and it minimizes itself.
4. I try clicking on the minimized d2 yet it still minimizes everytime.

info: I have two screens that can be joined to make it show one full screen 2048 x 768 and the colour at 32 bit (true colour). I also tried changing the screen size to 800 x 600 at 16 bit, but it didn't help. I was wondering if this happened from my excessive alt tabbing while playing d2. How can I fix this? The only way I have gotten it to work is by restarting the computer.

Hey,

I doubt this is happening because your Alt-tabbing (I've Alt-tabbed many times during the loadup). Are you using Direct3D or DirectDraw to run the game?

I know that some other programs can cause D2 to minimize (though I've never heard of them keeping D2 minimized), but it might be worth looking into and seeing if there's any unnecessary programs running at the same time (like MSN, or something).

One thing you might want to try is to create a shortcut to "Diablo II.exe" on your desktop, and then add -skiptobnet at the end of the shortcut at the end of the target line (so it ends up similar to this: "C:\games\Diablo2\Diablo II.exe" -skiptobnet)

When the screen minimizes (after Alt-Tabbing), try to right-click on it and choose "Maximize" (sometimes the program stuffs up).

Failing that, try running the game in window'd mode, to see if it has any effect. To do this, create a shortcut similar to the one mentioned above, but instead of typing skiptobnet at the end, use -w ("C:\games\Diablo2\Diablo II.exe" -w)

I have no experience with running diablo (or computers for that matter) on multiple screens, and so I can't really say whether or not that could be a cause. If all else fails, perhaps you might want to try running the game on a single screen, if only to see if it works (so we can at least rule that out if needed).

Best of luck

I'm using Direct3d to run it.

Alright, I'll try that later today when I get home. It's weird though, I've never had this problem until recently.

Do you mean rename it then add -skip to b.net?

I'll try that as well, I never knew you could run it in a window.

I've ran the game in a single screen by changing the resolution to 800x600. Both screen just project the same thing. Whereas usually I have it displaying one full screen in both monitors.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll get to them when I get home. Appreciate the help.

Go to a shortcut for the game. Either create a new one or use your old on. Open it's properties window and add:

-skiptobnet

after the closing quote of your shortcut. Don't rename the quoted part of the shortcut. The "-whatever" adds a command line property when you run the game. When you click on the shortcut, you're computer will try to run the quoted shortcut, but it will also send the program any following commands. Diablo has commands to skip to battle net, run in windowed version, run in 800x600 or 640x480, set map generation seed (for single player only), and possibly others. I remember diabloii.net having a list of them somewhere, but it had some erroneous ones.

Also, the playing on multiple windows might be part of the problem. Check your video controller to see if any of the settings are off. I used to run a dual monitor set up: 19 inch and 15 inch. I could never get D2 to function correctly when it sent to both, so I limited it to the 19 incher and used the 15 inch one to display AIM and winamp and other little programs. That way I wouldn't have to alt-tab out of diablo.

Good luck. Give us an update when you figure out how to fix it or if you need more info.

Translation: right click shortcut
select properties tab
in the " Target box " you will see * "C:\Program Files\Diablo II\Game.exe" *
at the end where the " is, add a space, and then -w . Apply the changes, and then run d2 using the shortcut.

Thanks for all the help. I've manage to get d2 runnin in the window mode, however I have new questions about it. How do I adjust the size of the window that d2 plays in? how do I adjust the contrast/brightness setting in the game? because I tried changin them while in a game and I couldn't see any changes, if there were it wasn't noticeable.

I also tried deleting some stuff that were just downloaded recently, but that didn't work either. Matter of fact my screen just messes up once I try to load d2.

Whenever I need to minimize D2, I just press the Windows key once. Try that instead of Alt-Tab.

Sounds like you had programs installed that were taking the focus off Diablo. Basically, the program was trying to execute, and so windows would move focus to it, and Diablo would become screwed up (especially colours, sort of like a rainbow).

You probably didn't need to unistall and reinstall windows. Running programs like Ad-aware and spybot, along with uninstalling any unnecessary programs (especially those advertisement programs that comes with certain games) would have helped.

that is someone who would get very upset if someone spammed his thread requesting help in the assassin forum http://www.rpgforums.net/showthread.php?t=325165

on topic now....i ran ad aware and hijack this to solve my screen problems....i could tell the instant before the screen would mess up because my hard drive would start spinning as a background program was being loaded
