View Full Version : What's the Best weapon to make HOTO
Hi
I want to make the rune word HOTO but am not sure of the best weapon.
Need one for my Necro so it needs to be light weight.
Would a war hammer work ok?
Thx for any advice.
No, a war hammer isn't mace class (it's hammer class, but mace mastery for barbs gives damage, critical strike, etc).
The only one-handed weapons that can have 4 sockets which will work are flails, knouts, and scourges. Go with the flail ;)
...what sort of necromancer is this? Wouldn't a "white" runeword be better, with some juicy staffmods on the wand and a LOT cheaper runes?

Perhaps I'm overlooking something, but I can think of no necromancer build that needs a HotO. Just check out all the unique wands or the White runeword - its bonuses will stack with the skill bonuses from nonmagical wands.
Thx for the replys. I need hoto's plus 3 to skills to cast a better iron golum.

Or buy/find a magical/rare wand with +2 to summoning and +3 to iron golem.
I assume you have it in the switch, using another wand for your regular business.

I use HOTO on my necro too, and it's not a strange thing... I'm a summoner/poison and it works really fine. It give +3 to all skills, a ton of res to all, mana, oak sage to you and your minions... it's very good.
I only change HOTO for death web but since I didn't grab one yet, I'll continue with HOTO.
Arm of king leoric is good for summoner too but the chance to cast bone prison is just to dangerous. Other options are rare wands with +2 to necro skills and + to other usefull skills/mods but I didn't grab one yet.
My advice is: go for HOTO if you can afford it, you won't regret it's bonuses.
Waaaay to expensive just to cast a better iron golem (i assume the HOTO would be on switch). Get a magical elite wand, and reroll with 3 chipped gems to be able to spawn wands like
"Golemlord's Ghost Wand of Zeal"
+3 to summoning skills (Necro only)
+3 to golem mastery (necro only)
+3 to iron golem (necro only)
+1 to summon resist (necro only)
level 3 zeal (50/67 charges)
Or something equally strange.
Another option (even better) would be to go to a vendor and BUY such a wand. It's better than using a HOTO on switch just to get a extra point in the golem, when you _could_ get a much cheaper item to do a much better job...
Yes, it is for a switch.
I use a 47 Death Web with a 5/5 poison facet for killing.
I want to make a golum with the highest possible health without spending points in Blood Golum for extra heath.
I first want to use Call to Arms to increase my skills, then to weapon switch with HOTO and Bone Flame Sheild +6 skills. Then I want to cast a Golum out of a weapon that has a usefull aura to my merc and minions.
I need my golum to survive as long as possible.
I'm still thinking about the most usefull aura.
thx for all advice.

If you are going to have an aura golem, Id hope you are either REALLY rich, or you never play hell, because the things with the best auras cost many runes.
IF you do something crazy, like making an eth beast runeword and making an iron golem out of it, DO NOT go with just boneflame and hoto for +6 to skills... A necro head can get +3 summoning (golemlord's) AND +3 to say iron golem, summon resist and golem mastery. Same story when it comes to wands.
Bottom line is, with the correct (blue) equipment you could get +12(!!!) to iron golem, golem mastery and summon resist from weapon swithc! Twice as much as you'd get with your expensive rune words and rare uniques.
About the most useful aura, if your necro has a bramble, and your merc has might (and perhaps even concentration) then the best (but expensive) option would probably be something that grants fanaticism. Think the only option then would be "beast", as i think the other runeword is missile weapons, and none of them can be golems.
Then there are a lot of good possible golems without auras to "test drive" with, before you go crazy. Good options are IK maul, upped bonesnap, hone sundan, windhammer, bloodtree stump - all of which grant crushing blow. Try and make an elemental immune one. To do that, make sure that item resist + summon resist when creating golem (or entering a game) + 100 poison + 50 lightning > 100%. This has been tested, and works.

I've made crazy IG's out of runewords etc back during my "testing" days ... and while they are pretty fun to play with they are certainly not indestructible even with the best items.
Be prepared to lose your IG ...

I'm a bit confused over this... when you leave the game doesn't the IG die? Then you have just wasted a beast runeword?? For one game of play. Then you could just as well make an eth beast BA, and use it for some few duels untill it breaks :S.
Another thing, will an IG be immune to all elements if I make it out of a 100% all resist paladin shield?
Last thing :) why is a white wand so super good? I see it as an expensive, and very weak wand :S
when you leave the game doesn't the IG die?
No it doesnt.
Unlike other golems ig doesn't disappear when u leave a game.
I still think its not very wise do make an ig from an expensive rw because he will die eventually.

Okay please list what can make it dissapear then :P
I think it is the following:
Create new golem (IG or something else)
IG dies
Unsummon IG
Necro dies
It is only those 4?

Pretty much but one more thing:
Items that grant IG (like the unique amulet, Metalgrid) by charges will disappear after a game. Skill based IG's like what necros have will carry on from game to game until the points you made above happen.
The problem with minions is that the game some times (especially when on the move) kills them (including Iron Golems) randomly. And Iron Maiden will gut the golem as well. Teleporting takes care of that, but not all necromancers like/afford using enigma...
And about that elemental immune golem, yes if you make him out of a 100% or more resist all pala shield he will be elemental immune, but it's kind of a waste, as all iron golems are poison immune anyway, and have 50% lightning resistance. Now, if you add 50% (or more) from summon resist, you only need any item with 50% fire and 50% cold resist!

To answer one of the unrelated questions, Bone Necros looking for 20% more FCR and wanting for more resists will use HoTo.
How is that one guy getting +12 from a magic item? I just assumed +6 was the most possible for any single magic skiller.
There are cheap and worthy runewords and items for making IGs. Insight, for instance. Malice gives open wounds (although it might suck your golems life away - never tried that one). If not Malice, then Steel. Holy Thunder is awesome at lower levels.
Also, some rares can be nice, like wands with a ridiculous ED etc...
Wiz spikes can be had for as low as 5 pgems and these will make an excellent elemental tank. Hell, plopping 3 P-Diamonds into a Tower Shield for a few nights worth of elemental immune golem doesn't seem that terribly expensive to me either.
It kills me that there is no metal bow for Edge. I got so excited until I realized all bows are wood.

Edit: Sorry. Forum lagged out and thread duped.

That one guy (me) wasn't talking about the switch as one item, but two. So +6 should add up to +12 without any bigger trouble than getting the actual items (Golemlord's wand _and_ head, both with +3 IG as staffmod).
