A cheap as hell but effective set up you could get for p-gems by trading would be the Desciples set, a suicide branch or a wizard spike, lidless shield, and a jalas main. Using one 10% cast rate ring would help reach a good % fast cast breakpoint.

The set and the helm would make your resistance skyrocket. With limited gear being that your new, relying on your cyclone armor to tank all resistance for you wouldnt get you threw hell.

But yea cyclone armor is a good thing to max. I would do what MrGoth recommended start collecting flawless gems and uping them to perfect gems. Then try to trade them for:
wiz spike
Jalals
mage fist

If I were you I would craft an ammy and 2 x rings to start. Here are crafting recipes.

Magic Amulet
Ral Rune
Perfect Amethyst
Any Jewel

Put those in hordratic cube and push the imbue button for a crafted ammy.

Magic Ring
Amn Rune
Perfect Amethyst
Any Jewel
