ok, i have looked at some guides, but none are made with the new runewords, so i would like to know what the optimal gear for a pvp smiter would be? this is for ladder, and lets assume that cost really isnt a problem (although finding the items is another story)

Find a v/t guide on pala forums, swap recomended armor and weapon with Grief BA/PB and Forti in dusk/whatever and tada :)
And people most likely use CoA 2 soc/15 pdr/ 25>res socked Ber Cham for DR and CBF. (if it's a melee oriented smiter)
Cheers,

i was under the impression that fort wont add dmg to smite, and i looked in the pally forums and i couldnt find any up to date guides for a v/t with the new runewords, i will look again though
thanks for the responces.

Enhanced dmg does affect smite. It's not shown that's all. +max/min jewels WILL NOT affect dmg though the *dmg from Grief does. Weird but ultimate cool.
Btw, just to hijack your thread for a while. Would anyone recommend a Grief in war spike. Just found a non-eth 5os war spike. Pretty excited since I've heard some people raving about a Doom war spike or a BOTD eth-war spike. Will a Grief war spike be cool to use?

A War Spike is not good material for Grief. A Phase Blade beats it in terms of WIAS by [-20] and has the same range [2]. The main problem is that if you get unlucky and roll a 32% or less IAS Grief on a WarSpike you'll need to make provisions for an IAS source ouside of the weapon.
Grief is best made in a Phase Blade for the astonishing base weapon speed or a Berserker Axe/Naga/War Axe for the range of 3 (requires outside sources of IAS to hit 6fpa Smite). Nagas and War Axes are options because of low strength requirements but choosing one of them makes the weapon a bit less powerful if used on a Barb or Zealot for instance.

A nice all-round smiter setup would be:
Grief Phase Blade
Fortitude Armor
Exile
CoA/BER BER
Dracul's Grasp
Verdungo's Hearty Cord
Sandstorm Trek
Bul-Kathos
Raven Frost
Mara's Kaleidoscope
Godly Rare Rings or Amulets are not included since these are extremely hard to come by, if at all.
Charms would be +1 combat/+45 life Grands and 9 11res/20life Smalls but that's utopic. Personally I have lots of small charms of vita (20 life) and 4 combat skillers with life ranging from 18 to 28. A Combat Skiller boosts damage with ~25 while a 20 life small charm gives ~35 life thats why I prefer vita rather than damage.
If you (or your enemy) don't like Life Tap a good option would be a Phoenix Shield and Bloodfist Gloves.
For specific duels though this setup needs to be optimised.
For instance:
Vs. Cold Sorcs the Shield needs to be replaced by a 4 PSapphire 45% all res base Paladin Shield.
Vs. WW Sins Death Hand Gloves are very useful.
Vs. Lightning Amazons a Thundergod's Vigor is recommended. Personally I use it for the +max Light Resist not the absorb, thus I prefer it to a Wisp Projector.
Vs. powerful elemental casters the 1 point spent in Salvation aura works wonders when I find it too hard to survive their blasts. It doesn't compromise my damage too much as well.
P.S. What a splodge... (a remark to myself  )

Sorry, I can't resist asking this question...Why Grief instead of Doom for smiter wep?

Errmm... damage???? I'm not sure though... :D
Grief gives infamous damge to smite. Huge. Tremendous. Doom slows down but your damge will be far lower, plus its considered BM in many dueling rooms. Not sure which one works best in smite vs smite, though. Well, u always can counter the slowness with many ias on gear, in theory.

There's really no point. I always get a point in HF for my Melee Paladins just in case I have some special occasion to use it in. If I put HF on with a Grief and you have Doom with Fanat, I still will win (generally).
