a fireball sorceress is probably your best bet. I had one that gave 8k damage with some easy to find stuff (tals amor, belt, ammy, silkweaves, occy, lidless, some rare rings, and no charms) Also, if you learn how to tele right, you can probably beat more than half of the casters in public duels.

What char is your friend using? Try a smiter. Those arnt expensive and can kill most melee chars.

A large part of PvP is based on the items that you wear, so until you get some nice items, don't expect to be viable against a large number of chars. Having said that, any of the above suggestions are good, though a FireBall sorc might have some problems with mana.
Personally, I would recommend a CS zon. Most of the damage (and there's a nice amount of it, too) is based on the skills you have, not on the equipment, so you'll do okay with even the most mediocre equipment. It also requires no attack rating, leaving you with less worries in equipment.

these are great for mf too =).. to bad that its mostly light dmg, and it can be absorbed.
