If you set the build up right its awesome. Your only problem is that you will only have the skill points to max one skill and 2 synergies in a single element after you pay for max ES.

agreed :)

I would also recomend reading this guide Energy Shield Explaned (http://strategy.diabloii.net/news.php?id=564)

If you dont like the huge sacrifice in skill points then I would be inclined to use Milady's-Knights Damage taken goes to Mana Guide (http://www.rpgforums.net/showthread.php?t=245089)

Builds that work well with ES :

Any single Element Sorc ( but u wont get to use all your synergy points)
Ranged Enchantress
Full Synergy Frozen Orbtress

Some duel tree sorcs can use ES but they tend to use a slightly toned down version. , but they tend to do a 17-20 telekenesis and a 1-10 point ES.

Have a 93 sorc on ladder wearing Full tal set.

Tbh I find it very nice just to have a staff with es on the switch. Have all those juicy skill points left for whatever tree of doom you may choose8) Atm I have 59 perc absorb ES and it works great for me. Clear the pits using in general 1-2 health potions.

I do play on ladder and it works great in conjunction with the new insight runeword. I do get massive drain from my mana orb cause of no telekinesis synergy but my experience is insight rw fills that orb extremly fast.

Gloams do empty my orb all the time but it goes so fast up again that its viable enough for me even against them 8)

Just my thoughts!

Energy Shield can be effective for lightning or pure orb sorcs. Otherwise, don't bother getting it, especially if you're going dual tree.

My sorc is dual tree. Lightning/cold.

ES rocks.

Wish I had more pts in it however...

Zhar and I did a little testing one day.

His Sorc with Eshiled took 5 14k FireBalls before dieing
If we let his mana regen totaly he took 10

Another sorc without eshield took 3

Both were built very well and had some very nice gear.

I love eshield, I won't make a sorc without it now.

You make me wanna rebuild my Light sorc with ES now.

I've always thought putting one point in there isn't such a waste, as you get a decent %taken from mana with +skills items. I've had maxed ES sorcs, they're very hardy but can go very fragile when facing manaburnpacks. But in HC putting even one point in ES improves survivability a LOT. It's practically having the same as more health in PvM.

The best way to do it in my opinion is to get a +9 to Eshield memory staff, and max TK. You end up with a ~75% Eshield and only loose 20 skill points.

Zhars sorc is also very, very nice. ~1k Life and ~2k mana
