View Full Version : Watch out for scams!
This may have been posted somewhere else in these forums, but I've had a few friends on bnet as of recent get fooled and ripped-off by the following scams:
Trade Window switch- when trading for an item make sure you put the cursor on the item your trading for; don't just takee the person's word for it- this often happens with gulls and plain daggers since they're so alike, but also many other elite items have crappy versions that look the same. Just be suspicious of anyone who shows u a gull then exits trade screen to "make more room" then comes back with a normal dagger or whatever else ur trading for.
Clan Scam (/DND scam): people will ask you if you want to join their clan. they will ask you to goto a private room (so noone else can alert you), add your account to their friends list and ask you to do the same. they will then ask you what your "dueling and damage ratings" are. WHICH DOES NOT EXIST! They will tell you you can find this by typing "/dnd (acct name) (acct password)- but what it really does is tell your acct info to them since you are both on each others friend lists and they can SEE EVERYTHING YOU TYPE! Just do not type your account name and password anywhere for any reason except to log on to your account.
Anni Scam (muling scam): Since annihulus and gheeds charms cannot be put into the trade window people will do drop trades, or someone will ask you to "watch" their stuff to mule it- either way they will go out of town at the rogue encampment right around the wall so you can see them out of town- they will drop their stuff and ask you to do the same either for the trade, or to prove that you are "trustworthy", then they will teleport from the blood moor into town and take all ur stuff- it doesnt matter if there is a moat either- they can still teleport over the moat and take your stuff.
Free item (Vote for my Clan scam)- some more ingenious scammers have developed programs that can read your cd key, or acct name and password, or just simply make you drop everything you have on your character. They will say they will give you a really good item for free if you "vote for their clan on an internet page- by minimizing D2 and going to a webpage that they tell you to- and clicking on a certain link- you then download a D2 patch or hack program that will take your acct, cd key or items since you still have D2 running.
Hack program scam- There are a number of maphack programs, or other programs on websites on the internet that may actually work- but more often than not they will record your cd key or acct name and password and send it back to the program's author after you start them up along with diablo.
Reverse Scamming- This doesn't mean you can use these methods to scam either! there are "scam the scammers" hack progs too- where you can teleport out of the town, through buildings in town, lock into your hacking item purger and make it work on you!
So, in summary:
-Never type your account name and password, except in the log on screen, or if you want stuff taken from your account. Ever!
-Do not use hacking programs! You might be able to find a non-scamming hacking program, but probably not without having to pay $$ for it- plus, when you use these, you never know what holes they might have that can be exploited by other scammers to take your stuff!
-Never drop your stuff on the ground unless you are prepared to lose it. If you want to trade for a annihulus or gheeds charm- contact someone from this forum with a good amount of posts and have them moderate the trade.
Sorry if I am just repeating other posts- I am just sick of watching/hearing about honest people lose their hard-earned elites, runes, charms, etc. If you know about other scams not listed above, please post as attachments to this.
RPGForum Moderators: if there isnt already a sticky for this somewhere- please make this one.
Good luck and happy hunting!!

AFAIK, there is no such sticky, but you're correct in stating that it might be useful. I certainly come across "I've been scammed" threads once a week or so, all with one of the above-mentioned scams.
That said, one reason I could see for not placing such a sticky anywhere is that beyond educating new users to the game about what to look out for, it also serves potential scammers as a resource for how to scam. In other words, putting these up for all to see daily is indeed a way of making everyone aware of the scams out there, but it is also a way to make everyone aware of how to perpetrate such scams on others. If I had to venture a guess as to why we don't see something like this up, this would be my guess.

Very true though most people who come to the boards tend to ignore stickies anyway.
Unless you entitled this thread FREE L337 STUFF!!!1!1!CLICK HERE!!1!1 then i doubt people would take the time to click it.

Thank you for the heads up. I've recently got tricked by the anni scam (I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted to see one!), and the sorceress lagged me and got my item. Nothing too valuable.
i was scammed by the anni trick back when was new to d2. ive only been playing for about a year, so didn't know the ins and outs. Now unless its a person i can physically see and kick their butt if they do wrong, i dont trade for anni and gheeds. And as far as the noob scammers tellin me to go to a website, i just laugh at em and leave.
I actually had some guy try to scam me with the DND trick last night. All i did to him was open a trade window, put all my stuff in it, and politely said "With all this stuff i have collected, you think im foolish enough to dnd my user name/pw? LoL ya right." And then i left.
Its amazing seeing the way some people just cant be happy with finding the stuff so they have to scam others, because they cant get it on their own. Everything i have on all my characters is legit, either found by me or one of my friends. Ive kinda turned into a self-appointed D2 police officer, occasionally screening the games for the free enigma trick, or the free anni stuff, or the clan stuff, and then i go in with my low levels and just wait for someone who i think will fall for it, and forewarn them. Hated the 1 time i got scammed, so i dont want to see others being scammed.

i've never been scammed.but a few people have tried. as a general rule, i think scammers are more motivated to find out how to scam than new players are to avoid it. anyone who knows how to use google can figure it out. so i think it's probably better to warn people at the risk of giving some jackass any ideas.
Hmmm that gives me an idea,

I thought I'd just add on to the list:
The Palace Scam - A lot of the best scams involve two or more people. This is a scam I fell for when I first started playing Diablo 2 . It requires two people, the "trader" and the item stealer. The scam takes place in the palace in act 2. Someone might say "I'll drop trade my annihilus for your SOJ". So basically he'll stand on the ground on the left of the palace while you stand inside the palace right next to the palace cellar entrance. You'll be directly above him and he'll drop his annihilus and you'll drop your items. But since you're standing above him, and inside the palace building, it seems as if there is no possible way for him to come steal your items. But the scammer's friend is hiding right inside the entrance to the pallace basement. Right after you drop all of your items, his friend will pop up from the palace basement entrance and will steal your items.
Trapsin scam - Another scam involving trading the annihilus small charm. A trapsin with lightning traps that do massive damage will try and pull this scam off. She'll stand inside of town next to the wall and say "I'm inside of town so I can't teleport to steal your item" and drops her annihilus small charm. And you'll be on the outside of the town wall so it appears safe. But the trapsin, at the start of the game, hid her traps by placing them underneath trees so it'll be somewhat difficult for you to see them unless you really try. So as soon as you drop your items, the trapsin will hostile you and all of her hidden traps will kill you while your items are still on the ground. She'll then waltz outside of town, take the items, and leave.
"I can dupe" scam - There's a program that allows you to create multiple copies of mephisto soulstones. From what I've heard, it's not really duping, but just creating a program that creates soulstones So this person will create a lot of soulstones and drop them on the floor. He'll say he has the ability to dupe and ask for an item so he can either teach you how to dupe or he wants you to give him an item for him to dupe, You can always tell when he's lying by asking him to give you one of his items that he duped, Usually he'll come up with some idiotic excuse and you can easily tell that he's lying. A guy named beaner_baba (*mexican_bum) likes to use this scam on the west realm so you might wanna watch out for him.
If some one offers to dupe your gear Don't. They will ask you to put all your gear in your stash then kill you 16 times.
They will then ask you to put your gear back on. They will kill you again and all your gear that you put back on from your stash will drop to the ground for them to take.
Be carefull!
I forgot about dupe scams.. Here's another one I found in the strategy forum.

good work guys~~ I got one here too
cheap trade scam: usually in trade room which involves 2 guys (they are most likely friends). Eg. one guy says I need a 3 open socket sword badly, then goes to trade screen with you and shows you what he got for the it (probably a bunch). But of course you wont probably have it, then the another guy goes to trade to screen with you and so happen to have 3os sword (yea right), then you might think 'hey if I could get that 3os sword then trade it with the first guy for his bunch of stuff, then I'd make a profit~!' Well the second might want some or your stuff which values > a 3os sword. Then after you got the 3os sword, you would want to find the first guy. But he either leaves room or ignores you. There you go left with a 3os sword.
She'll then waltz outside of town, take the items, and leave.
this doesnt work, when trapassins enter town traps disappear, at least in 1.10 ..
But they can hostile and run up and mb you..
Here's another one I found in the forums:
"The Tal's Armour game was the game in which the anni trade occured. A paladin (unfortunately, I cannot recall the name) entered the game and offered an Annihilus for my Um.
The suspicious thing about it was, the game crashed at the exact instant (or at least as close as I could determine) when the other player would have dropped his Annihilus.
Sequence of events:
I drop Um.
I take a step forward.
The game crashes.
When I got back after reconnecting, the paladin was nowhere to be seen and half of Lut Gholein turned into an instant crash zone."
So prolly best to just not trade for anni's out of this forum, especially if the deal looks too good to be true.
Here's an older one I forgot to include previously:
Dueler Scam- In a dueling game most likely, someone may try to convince you to continue to duel after repeatedly dying without collecting your bodies. After about 15-20 bodies(I think its 16, but unsure) lying around, your character will "pop" and drop everything on the character they are wearing. Some have reported people offering rushes or items if the victim allows them to kill them 20 times.
Sounds like you dont learn from mistakes :P.2 of them have happen to me.The first one the switch was i was trading for tals armor.i was trading 2 items for it and he said wait i have to make room then replaced it with a rattlecage luckly i saw and im your a loser.the second one was teh trustworthy one.he droped his stuff while i was in bloodmoor then he said your turn so we switched. This was back in 1.09 and when i droped 5 things he picked up grisz weap and sigs lol.
Update: Drop Trading Scams-
I have heard a number of people say they have been scammed through drop trading in town where the scammer goes through objects or across non-travelable areas, i.e. the tents or walls in act 1 rogue encampment, act 2 through the palace walls where jehryn is, act 3 tele across the bridges or betwen square-shaped areas at the Kurast docks, and act 5 from one level to another like from stash level to the next level up. Do Not Drop Trade unless you are willing to lose whatever it is you are dropping.
Darnoc
Ghost Item Scam- I can't believe I forgot about this one earlier; there is a program that can make it look like someone has an item in a trade window, usually a soj or something that takes only one square, but the item is not actually there. It appears in the upper right corner of the trade window as I have heard. This fools people into thinking they are trading for the ghost item, when in fact they are just giving away their items.
This can be checked for by asking the trader to move an item to a different location in the trade window- if the person refuses to move the item from this square, do not trade.
Trade Window Hack Scam- "one way of scamming a person via the trade window is a hack. That hack allows you to keep the tradewindow open when you exit it. That way, when you reinvite the person to open the trade window again, he isn't really clicking ok to open the window but clicking the V to green. Thus automatically transferring the items he put in the trade window to the other player. This hack is one of the reasons why I never trade on Bnet." Courtesy of Dawnmaster
One way to avoid this problem would be to only open the trade window with a specific trader once per game, especially if you have not traded with that person before.

This thread has been very useful to me...now I know what to look out for. I've been scammed twice, and my bf told me to read up on the scams out there. Well, I have now, and now I know what's out there. Thanks!
Thanks for the feedback Shadow, always nice to hear this is helping someone out. Here's another scam that just came up..
"Can't Make An Account" Scam- Alot of people have been asking around in the chat rooms if someone could make them a new account / new character; they claim that somehow they cannot see / read / type / or whatever in the creation screen. Here's what will happen if you do make an account for them:
1) You create an account for them.
2) They use it to bot.
3) Your CD-Key gets banned, no harm done to them.
Useful thread, so I decided to stick it.

I got scammed once. I wanted a Gheeds and someone offered to trade me one for 3 p-topazes. I thought it was great to get one for cheap like that since I had piles of the topazes. He told me to get behind the bar in the Inn and drop the 3 topazes and he'd stand on the other side of the inn and drop his gheeds. Then he said on 3, run for the gheeds, and he'd run for my topazes. Well, apparently you have to run around the bar and they can pick the stuff up from the other side of the bar and have time to get back and get their item. Don't even trade in Act 2.

LOL, what a patheticl guy. Cheating others for 3 pgems. I guess I would whisper mockeries to him for a few days... things like "OMG, I'm ruined, plz plz give me back at least one of them", "I guess you are quite proud of stealing all I own. My L93 sorc will need ages to recover from the loss.", "I thought that crime doesn't pay off. Am I wrong ?" etc. until I run out of ammunition :).

I got one, caught me completely off guard. A high lvl pally makes a game called Free hoto and cta here. When you go (like a fool) into game, he says he has to trust you, and tells you to drop your rarest items (mine were andy and seraphs, but i dropped andy and marrowalk). But first, he secretly positions his mercenary outside where you drop stuff, and when you drop, he drops his hoto and cta while goin hostile and the merc kills you. Then he strolls outside and gathers his stuff. See above for the moral: Never drop your stuff 'less you want it taken.

Personally, I have not seen it done or heard about it until dawnmaster mentioned it. Since he seemed pretty sure about it, I listed it here. I'd say shoot him a pm and ask him when he's seen it last, maybe this scam has been fixed by blizz; that would be nice since this seems like a rather vicious one and has made be quite cautious when pub trading.

I'm not sure if this works or not, but I keep a look out for it everytime:
It's about the Hellforge quest. If I join a Baal Run game and party with everyone, and while I'm doing the Baal Run with most of my group, someone that hasn't done the Hellforge quest sneaks out and smashes the Hellforge, do I get the quest done? :S

I believe you have to be at the hellforge to get the quest, at the river of flame somewhere, or at least in town at act 4; so if you're in act 5 you won't get it. For all quests, you need to be at least in the same act as the quest being completed, if not within viewing range of the quest completion location. The only quest I know of that you can get without being present where the quest is being completed is baal; a player can remain in town in act 5 while partied with someone killing baal and still get the quest.
i know what u mean,i spent 6 mouths building my char and i had all my things stolen in 5 seconds on the euro ladder,i went to blizzard help thing but they said its my fault,i took out my copy of dialbo 2 and punched it in half, never played d2 since then.<gansta stlye beans on toast> :thumbsup:SORT THE HACKING OUT IN THIS DAM GAME AND IT MIGHT BE GOOD

No.
First of all, he cannot smash the forge since he cannot even pickup the hammer, or get a soulstone.
Second, if he hasn't one the quest before (meaning he *can* smash it), you won't get the quest if you are not in the same act.
CTRL + Left click scam.
Well when you press ctrl+left click on your horadic cube while in a trade with a npc, you wil get connection interrupted.
There are alot of varieties on this scam.
Example:
A stranger offers you to teach you how to dupe. YOu get very excited.
He then tries to tell you he will go to another act or he will go MF to make you feel secure.
He instructs you to drop your Items you want to dupe and then trade wtih a NPC (especially gheeds<-- the most believble since there was a dupe called Gheed's dupe once) and then instructs you to press ctrl+left click on your cube. You get 'Connection interrupted'. Then the scammer then takes your dropped items.

i remeber a few years ago- when you could trade 40 perfect gems for an soj... lol, i collected 40, and traded with a guy
he showed me the soj, and i loaded up the 40 p gems, then he flashed the ring around a few times, and i aske ,"what was that all about"
he said his little sister was playing with it.
i then selected ok, and recieved some piece of crap ring.
... how stupid of me.
also, when i was a newb, i remeber a high level said they were giving away free stuff, but you had to race for it. they made you run to stony and back, and on your way back they'd hostile you and kill you. i guess just for fun lol

At least now there is a delay if either of you change anything in the trade windows. I had someone try to trade me a LORE runeword shako instead of the unique shako, and deaths set war sword instead of the bk mythical sword.
The only one I've seen lately is the "Guess who" scam. Either from chat or a public game somebody makes like they know you and tries to get you to give or loan them items. Pretty lame.

yeah, being scammed really sucks, like today, I started a game called O items, cuz i wanted to trade a zaka bartuc and some other items, and a paladin came, i showed him the items and he asked what i want for the zaka. i said um. he asked: or maybe hoto if u give the bartuc too. Well, i was so excited, so i said yes, he showed me the hoto, and we traded. well my zaka + bartuc for a FLAIL. then he left the game, but i added him to my friends ( hmmm!!) list. i kept messaging him to please give them back. all he said was: lol u a n00b. i know i am, but i just want my stuff back so i can enjoy this game too. maybe someone of you can plz tell him to return my items. his account is party-frEak. if u can, then plz reply so we can trade it back.

That's one of the most common scams @ diablo 2.
You don't have to be an idiot or a "noob" to fall for it, you just weren't paying enough attention.
Idiots are the ones who scam people for pixels, I sometimes wonder what players (they're mostly rich in the game anyways) get for scamming, even for low items.
We all learn this way, try to be more careful next time you trade, always doublecheck
If you are new to the game, be sure to read all the scammer-warnings so you won't get scammed again.
Sorry for your loss.

I really want to thank you all for posting the usefull warnings. I've learned from my mistakes, and I won't get scammed again ;) and I kept messaging this fool who scammed me, and he just gave my stuff back :D I said things like: Your mother must be proud of you, she raised a real moron and such things. And after about 2 hours of messaging he gave it back hehe. So that's my hint ( I don't ensure it'll work always ;), when the scammer leaves the game, write down his account and add him to the list. Then keep messaging until he becomes crazy :D
thnx again for the good posts

Quick update here since everyone and their mother is key hunting, trying to get a hellfire, and no-one knows what the standard of heroes does:
Baal's eye (drops from lilith I believe) is identical to the eye needed in the quest in act three; since just about everyone skips this quest, many people may not remember this and trade for the quest item thinking they're getting a body part they need. I can't remember if you can put quest items in the trade screen or not, but it's definitely worth being careful here since the body parts are currently trading for like a hr on east ladder.
As for the Standard of heroes, which drops when you finish uber tristram along with the hellfire torch, many people are claiming 12 cubed in the matrons den to opens another portal- this does not work! There might be some use for the soh since it has a lvl 90 requirement, but no one knows yet; so until this is figured out and you see posts about it in the community forum confirming its use, it's best not to trade for them, unless you can get them cheap and want to gamble on the fact that it might do something. I wouldn't though.

I'm pretty sure people already know about this but..
There seems to be someone (at least) on Europe Ladder that has created an account that looks like it was made by a blizzard employee (Bnetsomething).
It asks to use /w acc pass for those accounts that you "want to save on ladder before the reset".
Just letting everyone once again know that DON'T GIVE YOUR ACC/PASS TO ANYONE ON BNET.
Oh and this might be a little late, the ladder probably resets in a few hours, but still.
Cheers.

Hey, I'm new to this forum Obviously I have'nt read all the replys so It's likely this has been said but just backup your saves regulary for any reason not only scamming but your computer might just die one day
How come nobody has mentioned this one: Scammer messages people "Free account with level 99 chars. Whisper [insert account name here] if you want it". People message him back. He asks them "What do you want me to change the password to?" People will tell him to change it to [insert password here]. As soon as they message him with what they want the password to be, the scammer logs off and tries to log into their account with the password they asked for, because some people are naive enough to ask him to change his password to the password on their account (without realizing they're giving it out indirectly), so they can remember it better.

Why scam anyways? I mean does it make them feel big if they take items off some newbs or what...do they feel like there not men or whatever until they cheat? I just don't get why they take the risk of getting banned...

Some people don't want to put in the time required to get the nice items, and would rather take advantage of others for their items; the fact that d2 items can be sold for real money doesn't help either. Many are not at much risk of getting banned, unfortunately, since they use accounts they have scammed from other people to do more scams- so their cd key is left intact while the person they scam gets banned.
This has happened recently with the mass banning of users using maphacks. Some were given accounts or scammed accounts from people and only use their map hacks and scams on those accounts, limiting their punishment solely to that account and of course the generous/naive person the got the account from originally has their cd key banned along with any other accounts they may have made.

iun reality, scamming is done by veteran d2 players who suddenly lost all their items. instead of regaining their items, they scam by stealing beginner players items, in excess. they then trade ALL of these items for *godly* things. scamming is a way to get items, but only at a disadvantage to others!

PFFFFFT. What kind of idiot would waste time even making any kind of hack for a COMPUTER GAME. If I had any hacking skills (sadly i don't), i would try to hack military intelligence or something big like that :D just kidding, but I still don't get why people waste time scamming others in a game.
A friend of mine just got scammed on European Ladder.
He said he was being offered a soj, and in return he offered 2 mal, lum, and some other stuff. After the trade however it turned out to be a ring with 15 to mana. Also, he was 100% sure it was a soj before he clicked trade button. Is this a new hack or something? I know for sure now not to trade popular items like sojs...
Account or charactername is magic-firesor by the way, according to him.

anytime you're trading for an item of some value, especially a soj, ask the other person to move the item around the trade window, or at least away from the top right square; this scam has been documented here and should be on the first or second page of this thread.

there is another trading window scam... after puting your items in the trading screen the scammer opens a hack and then when you press enter(like when sending a msg) your V will automatically turn green...

I read through the scams, and I was surprised by a few that I didn't know. Thanks for the heads up on scams such as ghost soj trick. ( don't want to end up with a mana ring :p )
As for the trade hack that makes you check your own box to green, would removing and placing your items work, turning the check to red? Or would you have to simply flash the item you're trading until the player has seen the item and it's mods?

personaly i never let it go "unred" until the trade is sure and safe
Another variant of the /dnd scam: was playing on the weekend and this fellow comes into the game, starts chatting. Ends up with "hey, do you need keys? Just type /dnd pword key". It made me laugh. A lot. I responded with "do you really expect me to fall for that garbage?", at which point he swore and exited.
Nice thread. I've almost fallen into 3 scams already, the trade window switch scam (like nigma archon then u will get the reg archon), the "I know how to dupe kill u 20x times" scam (died once and sounds fishy so I left game), and lastly and I almost had my acct stolen, was the "I'm helping out our site by making a lvl 99 sorc for you" scam. For the last scam I gave the guy an email address that doesn't exist coz of a typo! , wow that was close!. Did'nt realize it at first then it occurred to me that you can reset password by email.
My friend unfortunately lost his faith bow for enigma when the guy switched on him coz he was too eager. As a consolation I gave him my Splint Mail Nigma. I still remember the scammers account.
All this "hacking" you are referring to is actually "cracking". Hacking is always constructive, but the true meaning of the word has been mutilated by the media.
All this "hacking" you are referring to is actually "cracking". Hacking is always constructive, but the true meaning of the word has been mutilated by the media.
FYI- The word "hack" has only been used 3 times in this whole thread; pretty much everyone uses the word "scam", not "hack", here. The one time I used it myself was on page two and I feel I used it appropriately.
Hacking is never constructive; even if someone is just hacking into a company to find out info, and has no malicious intent it still is not constructive since the person is making use of system loopholes to find information thay are not supposed to see; it is never beneficial to the website/company/etc being hacked.
The one exception I see is if our government hacked into some militant/terrorist/drug dealer website to find information about some plan for the good of the public in general, but that still isn't constructive from the perspective of the terrorist/militant/dealer being hacked.
This thread is for discussion of scams used on bnet in d2; if you want to further discuss the prinicples of hacking and any media twisitng of the term, please make a thread in the off-topic forum and I'm sure a number of people will be willing to contribute to it.
I didn't see this listed under scams, but heres how it works:
You put an item up for trade, ex: Hoto, the scammer (usually) puts an expensive item up worth more than the hoto so they're guaranteed you will trade. When you click trade (the trade check stays green) if you listen carefully you can hear an item sound such as a flail (sound effect) being placed on the trade screen but the item he is trading to you does not change. (nor does the arrow turn red) When he accepts the trade you get the crappy item he changed it too.
Im not sure how they did it, but I've seen it twice now. So all Im saying is KEEP YOUR SOUND ON WHILE YOU TRADE!! And if you hear anything fishy just leave the game.
The best way is: LOOK AGAIN before you click the Check button.
When scammer swithes, there is a delay, so your Check button become Red. Check his item again before you click.

Someone in battle.net forum complained that he picked up a Zod in normal act 1 and later it disappeared.
Here, ask yourself, do you really believe "nor does the arrow turn red" ?
If this were ture, it would not be a scam. It would have been a serious program bug.
merging with stickied scam thread.
Sorry for your loss.
wow u are really lucky/ i just got scammed the other day exactlly the same way. i wanted to trade for a tal amu so this guy told me um+ lidless,
i was really excited and did'nt notice that he swiched rings.
and when i traded i founded a plain magic ring' it was really depressing couse i was working on a tal amu for along time and these 2 items were my
best ones. to bad i did'nt try your system.
btw it's a very noob question but how do i add so 1 to my friend list?
it's preatty amazing that ppl go to all this trouble to scam for items in a computer game, i mean it's like stealing monoply money from your friend's
house or something it's preatty sad.

Hi, this is my first post and I just want to make it useful. I encountered a scam today that I believe has not been listed in this thread.
A guy randomly messaged me and asked "guess who?". I guess I wasn't in the mood for guess (just did 5 pages of homework) so I replied "who is it?" He said that we were good friends in real life, but I know none of my good friends played D2, so I just kept saying I have no friends. Finally he said he was "danny". I told him I didn't know any "danny"s. I figured I knew a guy named daniel so I asked him if that was him, he replied "duh". He asked to see my characters and after a bit of discussion asked if he could "check my account out?" I said no and left.
So I guess the scam is to let you guess a name and then say "ya how'd you know" or something like that, and then ask to check out your account and steal your stuff. They will try to convince you to do so by saying things like "you know I'm trustworthy" or "you see me a lot at [where ever your "friend" and you see each other], so you can beat me up if anything happens anyway".
Wow this was a long first post. Hope I can make more contributions in the future. Don't fall for this scam guys, this guy ALMOST had me convinced there.

well, my contribution here:
1. first one is obvious but its a newbie forum so why not post it. When trading for shako beware of people showing you THE shako and then trying to sell you a white shako socketed with emerald. looks exactly the same in trade screen.
2. slightly less obvious this one I suppose - lets call it a pul scam (tm) :-)
when trading for the infamous ZAKA (herald of zakarum - paladin shield) the mod to look for is % enhanced defense. If you are trading for a perfect or near perfect zaka make sure its not socketed with a pul rune to improve the %ED.
@ Gabe – It amazes me too how people try to scam you and steal from you in a computer game. However, games like Diablo have “real life” potential – a friend of mine ‘worked’ for a person who traded items on ebay. (my friend got hrs for items he found) and the guy would make up to 1500-2000 euros a month from items. Perhaps this is part of the explanation. And of course, as anywhere else, there are also idiots and thieves on the realms too. Sorry for this OT rant.

Good luck and happy hunting!!
yea almost all of these have happend been attempted on me. i have seen this before so it helped. good idea to post this
Nice work guys, I have one too, I don't know if you already said this because I didn't feel like reading 9 threads of posts. But here you go:
This is not a scam, but to prevent this from happening, or on other words, HELP someone if you see this. You see a level 72 coming in a game your in, and then all of a sudden in a few seconds he leaves. Then, you see a level 7 coming in with the same username, then all of a sudden he leaves, the same level 72 comes in, suspiciously, the meanie waits to see if he leaves again, then once he does, he springs into action, checking the rouge encampment and taking all the items that were there to xfer. You, also running to help him, (barbarians are the best class for this because they run at the speed of light) beat the person whos trying to take the items, you pick them up, then once the lv 7 comes in, explain everything and give him the items. I, did this once. He was so thankful he gave me one of his soj's.
I don't particularly agree with your classification of those who would take items being transferred in a public game as "meanies". It might be a queer idiosyncrasy, but I absolutely HATE to see anyone trying to mule in a game I'm in. I explained this quirk in a previous post. If they would ask me to help them mule, and I had nothing else to do, I would help them out. But I feel cheated and being taken advantage of whenever someone comes in to mule in a game, especially if I made the game. Most people are asleep and don't realize what the person is doing, but I always keep an eye out for people trying to sucker me in this way. Besides, Blizzard dislikes the transfer of items between characters, and there are risks associated with it, in private or public games.
Also, barbarians are not the best class. Pallies with Vigor and Assassins with Burst Of Speed are usually faster, not to mention sorcs.
Alright, since things have been getting a little off track here, I'm going to recompile the scams list so everyone doesn't have to dig through 9 pages just to make sure they aren't missing something.
Also, I'll try to give a list of all the common Item Swap Scams that have been happening (i.e. tal armor-rattlecage). Keep an eye out for the new and improved scam guide; I'll have it out soon-
