Hi. I'm a newbie to these forums and to Diablo II. I've recently been looking at strategy sites, and they talk of Nightmare and Hell difficulty, without any clear descriptions of these. Can anyone tell me what exactly these difficulty settings are, and how they can be reached?

To reach nightmare you kill baal (act 5 last quest). Then an angel comes down, and when you quit the game, it says you've been promoted and theres a picture of deckard cain. In nightmare your resistance is lowered i think by 30? And all the monsters are harder. You start at act 1, and work your way up again. Then when you kill baal in nightmare, you get the promotion screen when you quit again, and you reach hell, the last difficulty. Your resistance drops even more, and you start out back again at act 1. The monsters ALL have one immune to something (immune to fire, cold, magic, physical etc.). If you beat baal in hell, you get a promotion screen, but you stay in difficulty hell forever. Though you can create games in nightmare and normal, you cannot browse through the list of games in nightmare and normal. Only games created in hell.

-40 nightmare, -100 hell..
And u have to killed Diablo (act4 last quest), if you dont have D2 Lord Of Destruction (Expansion). To get to nightmare and hell.
If you play on B.net. Which for a new pesron to d2 ( i'd rather not use the word noobie) would be best to play single player first, so you can play at your own pase. Anyways back to b.net if you do.... I'd be glad to help you out.

I disagree with that.
You can always make your private games (actually, most of the games I play are private ones), and even if you mess up a few characters you'll still be finding some stuff that can useful for the next try.
The advantages of SP are quite limited:
- /players n command --- on bnet you are limited to the number of valid CD keys you have
- character editors and other tools
- any number of games with just one key -> safe muling (or ATMA, but I already covered that)
On the plus side, you can collect pgems right away and get some proper gear without resorting to cheesy editors.

Sorry, Im going to have to go with Myrakh-2 here;
Single player is very boring!! Plus u dont have access to the new runewords!
Plus BNet u can make some new friends, and do some teamwork.
Very very very hard to play fun characters like Fire Druids in single player since u dont have friends to help you deal with fire immunes.
Plus on ladder u feel like u r accomplishing stuff, and u can show off your new items.
No comparison in my books ! Sorry!

i wasnt disagreeing in my post with myr (although i do disagree), i was just adding additional benifits. I personally feel one should play a character through normal difficulty SP to get a feel for the game before having any outside influences. This can also be done, to a slightly lesser extent, playing 1-player on the realms. After this, i recommend playing on Bnet most (all) of the time for the given reasons above.
Its also benificial to have a SP character or 2 for when your internet isnt working very well :)

Thank you all for the info.
I had a bit of idea about it, but you really cleared things up for me. Thanks.
