View Full Version : Drop gold before you die?
I have gotten into the very bad habbit of emptying my bank box of all its gold and dropping it on the ground next to the box if I know I am about to enter an area where I'll probably die. I only do this in solo BattleNet games or single player games of course.
Well, I got screwed last night. I lost my connection and ALL of my gold (1,550,000). My question is: does anyone else do this? Or am I the only bone-head out there?
What are you doing with all that gold? Haven't you ever heard of gambling?

I usually keep 1,000,000 for bringing back a merc, in a pinch the rest I gamble keeping 1,550,00 isn't a bad idea,
I would gamble it on amulets though atleast down to 1,000,000 the +skills amulet would be worth much more than that gold.

My playing strategy doesn't involve getting killed, so I don't have to worry about the gold at all.
And if I *should* ever get killed... well, it's not like gold is worth anything in D2. I usually keep my stash full, fill up my char as well, then gamble the char gold. Doesn't take long until the char is full again...
Well whaddya think I was keeping it for? Gambling of course. Just hadn't gotten around to doing that yet. ;)
IIRC merc resurrection is capped at 50,000. You anticipate needing to resurrect your merc 20 times in one game? Here’s a suggestion: if your merc is dieing that much, try not going there, or try leveling your merc.
1. Gamble. Good for crafting or if you gamble enuff ammys you might get a unique one (I got a rising sun from gambling heh.) or a "Godly" rare ammy.
2. Use it to fix your gear. (IMO: Ral runes should be used to repair gear when you don't have money. Plus with whatever gold 150000 or w/e u had when you got disconnected I'm sure you can fix all the gear you're wearing)
3. Don't drop gold. If you get disconnected or Rd you lose more gold than you die.
4. I think mercs are pointless. (If you always want them to live they can really take away your gold, If mine dies, I'm like screw it I'll get you when I need you, which is like never, too bad hes 10 levels apart from me.)

I dont tend to carry around more than 500K. I usually just pass it on2 mules or give it away to newbies after a MF run. ( just to offload normal uniques that I dont want )
I usually give all spare cash to my retired 93 Blizz Sorc to gamble with :)
Since my current MFer is only level 89.

I don't anticipate him dying more than maybe 5 times in the course of a session, but I don't MF I just quest with challenging builds. Therefore I don't get the absorbant amounts of gold that others get when they hit bosses over and over again. Most of my gold comes from selling white armors, staffs, wands and the like.
If I would not set a limit I would gamble all of my gold without worry. I like the bit of a cushion for the rare instance where I feel the need to take down the fantacism aura, with (extra strong or extra fast), and a pack of minions, While playing a passive barb :)

In this case I think you have a lot to do before you master this game. IMO a careful and conscious merc choice and dvelopment is crucial for any really maxed build. May be if you play only pvp based on high runewords a good merc does not make so big difference but otherwise he/she really do.
jimeez - I could drop gold before - especially when fighting Diablo or Ancients with any of weak untwinked chars in the really beginning of ladder season. As it is now on Europe - I use to get connection interrupted ca 1 time per 2 playing hours - all of a sudden - no muling, just playing the game. To drop ANYTHING is a risk.
