View Full Version : Romantic, or offensive?
No, this isn't about my latest victim, er, girl.
No, this is a local controversy. It'll be interesting to see what people's points of view are on this.

I would totally buy that bear. Now I'm trying to think of someone I could buy that for and not have it be like weird...I'm not seriously dating anyone and I don't want any of them to think I'm "crazy in love".
maybe "crazy in lust" that would be okay...think they'd change that for me?
crazy people can just shut their damn traps
I agree.
Now, I realize that there's really nothing for these "mental health advocates" to make a big news-worthy stink about, but this is just *****ing for the sake of *****ing.
As someone who should probably be committed, I find no offense in it at all.
I'm really sure the guy in who thinks he's Jesus in Room 12 is going to take the time out of his busy schedule of soiling himself to get offended over this...

Just explain it that way to whoever you give it to, and you'll be all set.

Those things are great. I wouldn't go the whole 9 yeards with commitment papers and all, but the idea is humorous.

Well, the commitment papers say that they're being committed to the person who's getting the bear, not a fake institution.
They're just being uptight *******s. Too bad the extra media will probably increase their sales.

I'm surprised at all of your responses. Maybe it's just me, my love for teddy bears, and my interest in mental illnesses, but I find that very very inappropriate. I wouldn't by any means like that bear if someone gave it to me. I'd appreciate the fact that they gave me something, but I'd frown inside at their poor sense of taste.
Nomatter what the company says, it IS making fun of mentally ill people. Otherwise, you guys wouldn't react in "awesome I'm going to get it right now" ways. It's just a bear, if it wasn't ridiculing the mentally ill, why be interested in it? Out of all the groups of people to pick on, why the mentally ill? It's not like they chose to have problems. I'm sure you wouldn't be so amused if you had the experience of being in a straight-jacket before.
Sure it's a crazy, unique idea, but I think they can come up with more meaningful and romantic "funny" ideas. Go ahead and sell that bear, it's a free world. I'm not saying they should take it off the shelves, but the company should have used better, less discriminating marketing tactics.
My mom is a nurse in the Psych ward of the hospital and I know she'd think it was funny.
$70 for a teddy bear is what offends me.

I didn't know that Valentine's Day had anything to do with romance anyway...

As someone who has been commited I find that less in bad taste than funny. I can understand why people react though. Anyone who's ever know a person stalked by an insane ex knows why it's slightly offensive. Anyone who knows anything about humor knows that slightly offensive humor is the best sort of humor.

so..... people in str8 jackets are gonna be offended is it?
"A straitjacket is not a symbol that we want to associate with sales of a teddy bear for loved ones over Valentine's Day," Goessel said. "And the use of commitment papers, legal documents committing an individual to involuntary treatment, is not something to be taken casually."
I'd be pretty sure they aren't legal.

I'm surprised at all of your responses.....
They are offending bears as much as they are offending mentally ill people.
Actually they aren't offending mentally ill people at all, they are offending str8 jackets!
Unless you think "LOL mentally ill people are stupid/funny" when you see this then no one is offended. Is that what you thought? shame on you!

Frankly, yes, it is in poor taste. Just like toilet humor and off-color jokes. Not the end of the world, IMHO. I'd buy it for my fiance because I know that she and I can share off-color humor with one another and not be offended, but for someone I hardly knew I probably wouldn't venture to get it. It would depend on the person. That said, I think that the company marketing the product could care less about who it might offend. The only thing on their minds is how much this bear will rake in, and they're probably jumping for joy at all the free advertising the media is giving them right now.
Humour is how different people see it. Some of you guys got told by a 15yr. old girl, though, and only Cajun could properly refute...
As said earlier, $70 is just silly for a stuff animal. For that money you could get some cute lille $10 stuffed bear and still have money to take your special someone out for a nice meal or some other fun.

Hey, I'm almost 16:D. 70 dollars for a stuffed-animal. Hahahaaha! It's not even Snoopy! Only Snoopy is worth that much. Talk about major rip-off! And yes, I'm sure the company is enjoying the attention.

I think your subscription to Logic Monthly has expired. Renew it.
It's just a bear, if it wasn't ridiculing the mentally ill, why be interested in it?
First, why do you think it is "ridiculing the mentally ill"? Second, why would you think that we would be interested in it simply because it's "ridiculing the mentally ill"? Do you think we're all that morally derelict?
Have you ever heard the phrase "crazy in love" or "I'm crazy for you"? I think that's what the company is trying to convey.
This company makes TEDDY BEARS. Why would they pick on people with mental disorders? That's like calling Cinderella a prostitute.
the company should have used better, less discriminating marketing tactics.
They're not discriminating by dressing up a bear in a strait jacket to convey the "I'm crazy for you" message. I would agree the bear's dress would be in poor taste if he were wearing a hat embroidered with "Crazy People Suck". But it's not. So I don't.
You're just oversensitive. They aren't picking on the mentally ill.
I'm offended that the damn thing costs 70 clams. For that type of bread you could have a romantic dinner for two at a good restaurant. Even better, you could make a romantic dinner for two at home and get some really nice champale.

EEW gross disgusting ugh ee aahhh *gets blinded* *stabs Hello Kitty*
Mentally ill people are not crazy. By using straight jackets, something used to restrain the mentally ill when they lose control of themselves, to represent crazy is not very nice. I'm not offended, the only mentally ill people I know are those I read about in books, I just think it's bad taste. Call me overly sensitive, I still don't think it's an appropriate marketing tactic.

Saying it's offensive is like saying escape artists are being offensive when they include escaping from a strait-jacket in their performance.
