Random Socket Cube Recipe

I was wondering what the recipe was considering the fact that lots of people seem to be using it. I am totally lost though. Thanks.

Arreat summit has a list of cube recipes.

There are different recipes for socketing different item types, but they are all along the lines of
1 Ral Rune + 1 Amn Rune + 1 Perfect Amethyst + Normal Weapon = Socketed Weapon of same type

It's usefulness comes from the simple fact that Larzuk always gives max sockets (based on itemtype and ilvl). The socketing recipe is the only chance to get less.

Keep in mind that your chance of actually getting the number of sockets you want is not that great (1/6)

The game picks a random number between 1 and 6 and gives the item that many sockets. If the item can't have as many sockets as the roll (ie. a 6 is rolled for an shield you are socketing), it gives it the max (which you probably don't want in this case).

It is probably worth it to use this recipe on some elite ethereal polearms, since rolling a 5 or 4 will give you a pretty valuable item. I know I'd be doing it more if I had more Amns

Well, it's worth rolling on ALL expensive-runewords-items, unless "max sockets" is worth at least a bit (if it has the good staffmods/automods). If nobody wants the unsocketed item you can either dump it in the trash or roll sockets... which makes a 1/6 or 2/6 chance look pretty good for skyrocketing the price from next-to-nothing to a pile of runes.

Especially since I have next no NO chance of getting runes beyond GUL (unless anni prices have recently skyrocketed --- I have a few stashed away, and they are reasonably easy to get) --- so a 1/6 chance of scoring a few ISTs (or, even better, some good items) from worthless items doesn't look too bad.
