Is the human figure so offensive that our society has become deathly afraid that *gasp* children might be exposed to it!!! Its a ****ing replica of a work of art, not pornography. What the hell? Ashcroft freaking about the "exposed breast" on the statue of justice, this guy panicking about a freaking lamp. Next we're going to hear about some advocacy group petitioning to have "Mature Audiences Only" stickers put on replicas of the David.
What is so awful about a nude figure? Can someone explain this to me?

I don't get it either. As if kids aren't exposed to worse things on television everyday. This reminds of a Simpsons episode.....then again most things do.
Edit: I don't why when I write certain things why they are highlighted as links

And now what you all came here to see, hardcore nudity!
edit: Isolde, I have the same problem. :( I think it's adware or something, I'm running ad-aware right now to see if I can fix it. I'll let you know what turns out.
Actually, I think that it has something to do with the site, advertising and such. I get it too, anyway.
And I agree, it's only our body, there's hardly anything to hide from our children.

Actually it's nothing to do with adware, it's something serverside called "sponsored links", check the following thread on the support forum for some info about it.

What are you talking about? The naked human figure exposes parts that, practical as they may be, are inherently evil! It will corrupt our children's morals should they see them?
That looks like a statue we have at the square in "brunnsparken" in the city and another one we have outside my house not far from the playground.

In other news, the opening ceremonies of the Olympics have now been deemed too risque for some: http://www.mediaweek.com/mediaweek/headlines/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000735588
Next, Micheal Phelps is gonna have more fines tacked onto his DUI sentence for wearing a swimsuit that was too small.

Wow, that's terrible. One group is essentially spamming the FCC with enough complaints causing them to start dishing out fines and stuff? Maybe we can start spamming the FCC with complaints about censorship or complaints about the PTC or praises to offset the complaints.

We still cling to a quasi-prudish heritage - which creates an interesting and ongoing double standard in American society. On one end we worry about the "harms" of sexuality and have major moo-cows about statues with an exposed breast, or god forbid, seeing Janet Jackson's nipple. Yet... we fully allow "sexualized" advertising and merchandizing that does the most to sexualize us at an early age.
I'm reminded of the signature quote (I believe was on PLF's sig)... As seen on a 10-year-old's shirt: "Pop like a cherry" (or something to that effect).
Ahhh, glorious hypocricy.

I believe the governor of Vermont has some type of a personal problem here.
Maybe he or his wife should darn a grass skirt and top for the statue to wear when the youngsters arrive at his office. We wouldn't want the governor to be embarrassed by some prurient question from a child.

if you go to the beach in summer you can see plenty of 'exposed breasts' anyway, so what's the big deal with seeing them on some statue?

The FCC investigates allegations of indecent broadcasts when it receives complaints. The procedure has come under increasing scrutiny with the recent disclosure that, aside from those concerning the controversial Super Bowl broadcast, more than 99 percent of recent indecency complaints have come from one group, the Parents Television Council.
The PTC says the FCC is failing to count many thousands of its complaints.
Could it have something to do with the fact that someone's drowning them in ridiculous complaints?
Pure Stupidity... Why people villainize the human form I'll never know. OMG, 4 seconds of Janet Jacksons breast! Runaway!!! Ruunnaawwaaayyyy!!!
If I were the FCC I would send a letter back to the PTC with just a copy of the first amendment and the words "read it" at the top.

Frankly, while I agree with most of what has been posted about this, I also wonder why people have to make such a big deal about an item being moved from one spot to another.
If there is truth to the story of the governor being wary of exposing visiting schoolchildren to the nude, then kudos to him. They aren't his children, and he has no right to assume exposure to a nude statue would be all right with their parents.
What's the big deal, either way? Is it worth a freakin petition? Overreaction.

Mixed, it's perpetuation the same phobia of the human figure that's leading people to panic about things that have been considered acceptable for decades. Like, for instance that pornographic statue of Justice at the Supreme Court. Given that DC was built based on the image of Parisian architecture, you might be surprised to learn that a lot of our national monuments and the like have similar nude figures. Shall we start dropping sheets over all of them because *god forbid* some kid might see a marble sculpture of the female (or male, for that matter) naked form?
It's art. If you start being wary of art because it contains nudity, despite a complete lack of prurient interest, then you start setting precedents to censor art. And, by the way, I'm not talking about pornography, erotic photography, or any such "art." I'm talking about classics that are art and have been considered acceptable for generations, and in many cases centuries and even millennia. People in this country are already uptight enough. Let's not encourage them further.
It has been my humble experience to discover that most human bodies are indeed awful.
That being said, since I don't live in Vermont, have never been to Vermont, and truly believe that it is a far, far too cold place to be, I really don't give a rat's *** what they put in their statehouse. After all, nobody said that the artwork wasn't good, wasn't educational, wasn't historic, cultural, enlightening, pretty, or any other of a number of glorious adjectives. So let the good people of Vermont and their duly elected representatives decide which trinkets should decorate their statehouse. And then we can ridicule them for it.

I understand all of this, DC. There are a few things, though, that I must consider:
It's his desk (for now). So what if he wants something temporarily (or even permanently) removed from his desk? Why does it even have to be public business?
If the thrust of the petition is based on the statue being a replica of a famous statue, then why don't they petition to have it moved to a museum? Isn't that where art truly belongs on display? What'll it be next? People flipping out because someone wants to move a print of the Mona Lisa from one wall to another? Crap, some crybabies have too dang much time on their hands.
I don't see any indication that there is nudity phobia here, or anyone freaking out about it, except the people making a mountain out of this molehill. The guy wants to move a lamp off his desk. Cripes.

He is a public servant and should conduct himself at all times with that in mind. He has to represent all of his constituency, not just his fellow zealots. I'm not sure if I should be most alarmed at your impression that art only belongs in a museum or your attempt to make this issue about "a lamp on a desk".

Now now; I don't see anything alarming in my post. It is not my impression that art only belongs in a museum, but a suggestion that if a piece of art has great meaning to a group of people, perhaps a museum would be a more fitting resting place for it. Sensible idea, in my opinion.
And frankly, what I see in the article is a group of people making this something other than merely an issue of a lamp on a desk. I see no concrete evidence to the contrary.
Also, your point about the governor being a public servant is well made. Understand, however, that there are probably a lot of people who believe that by removing a statue of a nude from his desk, he is representing his constuents. You don't think so; other people do.
Personally, I would not be adverse to my children seeing the sculpture. I just don't see why it has to be a big deal, if it's being moved somewhere else in the same building and will still be displayed.
If you wish to continue to be alarmed at my post, feel free. I don't pick sides on this one, I just play the Devil's advocate. Really, I have no proof this is about nudity at all; some other group might just as well claim he's moving it because the statue is of a Greek woman and he is obviously biased against Greeks.

its a total crock -- "keep children safe from nudity" -- these censors act like their kids are never going to take a shower themselves or enter a shower in junior high or high school gym class
whats next? -- do i have to put a diaper on my dog when i walk him so his balls dont offend anyone at the park?

Look. If God had wanted us to see other people naked, he wouldn't have invented clothing. Mkay?
It has been my humble experience to discover that most human bodies are indeed awful.
Damn. Beat me to it.
The human form in nude can be a marvelous, beautiful thing. But, as anyone who has been to a nude beach can attest, most of the time it is a horrible plunge into the realm of nightmares and pain.
Anyway... I think they should take the lamp off the dude's desk and put it out in the lobby.

There is nothing awful about human anatomy.
Human anatomy involves sexuality, and sexuality belongs to privacy.
We shouldn't be able to look at our own body. Its porn.
