View Full Version : (gasp!) verification please?
i just read this in wurmer's tesladin guide regarding facets:
"The increased % to skill does not work on the elemental damage added to your attack; it only works on the pulses of you aura. As another bonus, you get some added damage coming from the elemental damage on the jewel itself."
is this true?! 'cause oh my, if it is, i'm not gonna splurge on an expensive +% griffons, but just focus on the -%... i was really hoping that the +% DID work to help out my damage a bit...
can anyone verify this? i'm not saying wurmer's wrong or anything but i'd like to get some expert opinion quickly before i close a trade.
thanks!

Simple question: If a sorc had the aura to gain the elemental damage to her attack would her mastery boost that damage?
The answer is YES!
This is why auto auras are nice to have on a melee/ranged sorc.
+% and -% on facets work exactly like sorc mastery, anything the sorc does that causes elemetal damage will be boosted by that mastery. So Wurmer (sorry to say this) has a few things a bit mixed up.
There are some quirks to facets they work whenever the character using them, uses a skill and at no other time. So minions that use elemental damage (traps and skeleton mages, {I believe hydras are also considered that}) will not gain the bonus from the facet. The character has to be the one using the skill.
Another thing skills do show boosts on the LCS (lying character screen) that are not really there. If you facet a trapper her damage will grow on the screen but it won't in game.
If anything the aura pulse could be uneffected but, the added damage should definately be effected.
well that's a bit of a relief and a bit of a kick in the pants. i'm scrambling to grab myself a nice griffons before ladder season ends and prices skyrocket.
that's what i was thinking -- there's no way the facet wouldn't affect the added damage. if the pulses weren't affected i wouldn't be surprised, but for the straight damage to stay the same seems a bit weird.
thank you for the response!

hi exile, I got your PM and from my experience im pretty sure facets and almost definitely griffons does affect your output damage in your weapon. I know euro will agree with me that cold facets are like so for holy freeze, so I'd say light facets are as well. Still, I've never seen that line in Wurmer's guide, and now I'm a little scared :) Maybe Wurmer had best come explain this. Doesn't seem likely to me.
also, I'm very glad that people holds me in high regards :) but I only have a 5 message capacity in my PM and its really cramped there. Please dont besiege me with posts :xsmile4:
no worries. i'm besieging wurmer with a post now. :D
thanks for the insight and merry xmas.
oh, and btw -- i checked your gear list on europe -- the one with two annis and merman's? lol. well done, loner. very well done.
still, even with your equipment, i don't see how your pulses deal 5k max... i did all the calculations above and it seems that they deal much lower damage -- something near half iirc.

EDIT: just checked, the max is sub-2k displayed, without factoring +%damage and -%enemy res.

hehe, yes stupid of me
I still have my screeny of two annis on the same char somewhere...
as for mermans, i just goes to show why I quit europe :) its not where you want to be when there are at least 5 popular languages and all the hacked stuff. I never heard of a dual anni bug though, which is why I shut about 50 people down when they told me I can only keep one anni when I tell them I have two :)
Merman's didnt add damage, so there wasnt much change in dmg output even if my char is legitalized - -1 for putting on a raven and -1 for removing an anni.
Btw, euro hears of a bug that jewels not only affect skill damage, but at twice its supposed effect! No I didnt post that, and I have no clue if its true.
hah thanks for embarrasing me by linking that forum :xman:

Sorry if I was mistaken. Someone somewhere made a post with that information about the facets. It was in the paladin forum I am sure. Maybe in the downtime I have right now I will search and post a link to it.
Wish me luck...should only take about 3 years.

im not sure why I put 5k, maybe i did estimate with -% enemy resist (assuming they have standard 50% for hell to begin with) or maybe you calculated wrong, or maybe jewels really does work at twice effect, or maybe im stupid.
i'm almost positive my calculations were correct. i used a skill damage calculator for the base lightning damage then factored in + and - stuff for the actual values.
i'm quite certain that it's impossible for the pulse damage to go very far over 2k displayed max damage. of course, the calc could be wrong, or the facet bonuses could be wrong, or i could just be really confused right now.
:D
Facets won't affect aura-added damage twice, they only double up the damage for 'prebuff' type affects, like enchant and venom, once when the spell is cast, and a second when the damage is dealt. Since the aura-added damage is similiar to an elemental charm, the increase in damage is only applied once, at the time of the hit - it's not an effect that is 'cast' upon the character so it doesn't receive a bonus then.
i'm not worried about the double-application. i was worried that it didn't apply at all, as seems to be suggested in wurmer's guide. but from what i understand out of these responses, facets and griffons DO affect the aura damage (though only once, unlike sorceress fire/lit masteries).

and I understand now that I was a dumbo (where "o" can be replaced by three other not so friendly leters) at that time if I ever posted 5k for aura pulses :)
I could always make another tesla ranger (shock hunter, according to my long forgotten guide) and work these things out. Lightning facets have gone up to indecent prices though, and a griffons has the worth of a death fathom.
no worries, exile, go ahead and make your tesladin, its worth it. Oh, and to answer a thread i just saw before this one, smite does note work with holy shock, or all our problems with hitting would be solved (plus v/ts would go super insane since holy shock happens to synergize FOH) If holy shock did synergize smite we'd have a char like this:
20 holy shock
1 smite (dont need for damage, nothing else changes with more points)
20 resist lightning
20 salvation
20 holy shield (or fanatism, which with redeemer gives very deadly physical smite damage)
20 FOH
and then it would be the ultimate paladin, unfortunately no :xsmile:
