View Full Version : This is getting rediculous
I have always had a deadly peanut allergy.
I remember when I was about 3 maybe 4 years old, the man at the local grocery store told my mother that Raisinettes now said "may contain peanuts". The man was a friend of my mothers, so they explained to me that these places dont clean machines that process food. For the next 13 years i avoided "may contain peanuts" like the plague.
One by one, year by year i watched my favourite snacks fall victim to "may contain peanuts". I put up with it, until it was too much. I stopped caring, began judging. Lets face it, life without twix just isnt worth it anyways.
then i googled "may contain peanuts"; and stumbled into thi.

Doritos? cheetos?
give me a ****ing break, this "may contain" business needs to end.
I think that's just the company covering its *** in case someone has an allergic reaction.

Yeah if they don't do that someone will get an "allergic reaction" whether they are telling the truth or not then the company will get the crap sued out of them.
Well I would hope that goes without saying.
But thats really not good enough. I mean it seems very half assed to me. If they cant garuntee purity of their product who knows what the hell else gets in them?

Ever wonder why soap never kills 100% of all germs? because some greedy bastard will sue the crap out of them should they happen to get sick.

I think some of the time companies just throw that out there, even if it doesn't contain anything. Some guy might be eating two types of food and then gets an allergic reaction...but the company that has that printed can say he can't blame them.
No this isn't fact..it was just a scenario i thought up..probably not even true..but it's an idea.

This thread may contain peanuts. I can't believe you didn't label it properly.

NUT HARVEST Nuts (all varieties)
i wonder where they got that idea.
Dude, this one time I totally found a Goober in my Raisinettes.
Ruined my whole goddamn day.
So i am the only one that thinks this is unacceptable?
Its like the guys at the factory dump a big bag of substance X into your food, but since they dont know EXACTLY what it is... they throw out some maybes.

Read The Jungle. If you think all that only happens in the meat packing industry, you've got another thing comin. It'll make you wanna grow your own food and stick to berries for the rest of your life.

SOme say if it was not for that book, we would never had a health department nor strict food regulations.
Read it, its worth it.
Isnt that by Upton Cinclair? I think I will get it now that you mention it.
Could it be that they are using peanut oil in these products?
No, in that case the ingrediants would clearly say "Peanut Oil".

Dang it! Now I am going to be paranoid for the rest of the week!
Man, that sucks that all your munchie foods can kill you. Still, it's kinda funny in a morbid way.

If you look at it right, this makes pot a potentially lethal substance for him.
What never ceases to amaze me is the light hearted attitude everyone takes to this.
Not to mention the fact that most of you wouldnt know what the hell you were eating even if you did read ingrediants.

Jesus man, what do you want us to do? Start a campaign for you? I have a deadly allergy to pineapple, which I find amusing--who the hell is allergic to pineapple? I have a deadly allergy to penicillin, which I have a sense of humor about (nothing like your friends joking that you're really in trouble if you manage to catch a case of the ol' Clap). And while you're right, I have no idea what's in 99% of the food I eat that I don't make myself, I choose not to know. If I read and understood the ingredients on every ounce of food that I chose to put in my body, I'd stop eating and waste away because I'd be so revolted. Honestly, do I know what goes into that hot dog I just had for lunch? No. Do I want to find out right now? Absolutely not. I prefer not to throw up my meal right after eating it. If I wanted to know, I'm sure a quick google of Nathan's hot dogs would let me know, and some research into what the hell half of that list meant in English would probably let me know further. Research into the health laws and inspections of the processing plants for the company would probably give me an idea of what other fun things make it into my hot dogs, such as rodent feces or body parts, or other nonsense, but I choose not to.
The same arguments could be made about any number of things we take for granted. How about that tap water you chug down every day. Any ideas where that comes from? What goes into that? What levels of what chemicals are considered harmful by the EPA, and how close your local tap water levels are to the EPA standards? Honestly, there's only so much time one can dedicate to worrying about this sort of thing unless you're going to dedicate your career and life to it, which some people do. I personally choose to learn enough about it to be relatively informed, and enough that if I wanted or needed to, I could research it further to inform myself, but in the end I trust that employees of the FDA, EPA, and other regulatory agencies and watchdog groups do their job to a sufficient extent to look out for my health and safety.
Our society has progressed to a point at which we process so much of our food that its beyond the ken of 90% of consumers to even understand what the ingredients label says (can you honestly tell me what sodium benzoate is? its a main ingredient in the Dr. Pepper that I'm drinking, but besides "preservative," I don't know nor care to). There is little that we can do about it now.
Another book for you, by the way: Fast Food Nation.
most people aren't up in arms about it because for most people it doesn't matter. Any factory that makes food with peanuts cold potentailly get some cross contamination. If there were a group of people alergic to apples you can bet that there would be all sorts of wantings that other fruits processed in the proximity of apples (say blueberry poptarts) would carry similar warnings. Buy less prepackaged stuff and you'll be fine. No one is going to hide a peanut in your steak or your carrots. It isn't like these places are randomly throwing crap in vats. It's just a function of all the preprocessing we do with our foods now.

Why?
The truth may be ugly, but its still the truth. People with deadly wheat allergies have even more difficulty in finding food products they can eat, and have to avoid an even larger proportion of processed products than those with peanut allergies. There are thousands of afflictions out there that affect a small percentage of the population, all of which require that percentage to go out of their way and modify their behavior from what is mainstream in order to cope with it. Unfortunate as that may be, there is no one way we can live our lives to accomodate every one. I'm not sure how this is disgusting so much as it is the harsh reality of the way the world exists.
Dantose raises a legitimate point, and one that I'm sure your doctor would echo--avoiding more processed foods in favor of those you make yourself is the only surefire way to guarantee that you avoid coming into contact with foods that may have been cross-contaminated. For that matter, that's probably a healthier option anyway.
I'm not sure what exactly you're taking offense at--we're not making fun of your condition. Often humor is the easiest way to cope with a serious subject. I apologize if you found my comments inappropriate, but while a potentially lethal allergy is a serious thing, there are just some things that are begging for a joke to lighten them.
You disgust me.
yes, I know. You can't eat over processed food. You are starving to death because you can't figure out how to actually cook fresh food. Me, I don't generally eat the prepackaged stuff anyway so it really wouldn't effect me even if I was allergic. I know it may disgust you that I'm not offended by your inability to eat junk food but I really don't see why all these businesses should cater to your desire for a chocolate bar.
Oh wait! it took me all of 30 seconds to find peanut free snacks on google

Too bad it's a no name company like nestle. I'm sure you will never find any of their products in a store near you. You know what you could do. contact the major companies and request a list of foods they can ensure are peanut free. Keep in mind, they have to basically produce the stuff in seperate factories to be absolutely sure that it's peanut free. They probably aren't going to spend millions of dollars because you want doritos. You are so wronged.

I don't ask whats in food, it spoils the mcrib to know what deadly toxins are contained within
If it bothers you so much, its time for you to grow your own food.

Hey Geeno, I tried PMing you so that we could kinda hash this out, but your box is full. I hate leaving beef like this out there, and feel that this whole thing was probably a misunderstanding. If you wanna PM me, please feel free, or if you want to talk about it here now that its been a few days and we've both been able to cool off a bit, I'm all for it.
