It gives you max sockets on Elite items.

For normal/sup/eth items Larzuk will give the number of sockets allowed according to its ilvl, which can be found here : http://www.diabloii.net/items/sockets-list.shtml (ilvl changed to 1-25, 26-40, 41+, and all 4 "circlet" types are wrong in this list)

set/unique/rare : 1 soc
magic "blue" : 1-2 soc (50/50 chance)

you can always try the cube receipe, you take your chances with that but at least you have a shot at getting 3 sockets instead of a guarenteed 4.

Unfortunately the socket recipe doesn't work with low-quality or superior items, so 4 socks is the only number of socks this one can get
