just thinking this right, does the Diablo 2 community have the capacity to manufacture and host a diablo2 based half life / UT mod?

If anyone of you played RUNE the game it is based on UT engine and I think it was very good fun to go melee in FPS.

I haven't personally played it but i know from a few friends that WoW is basically on the lines of a 3D diablo type fantasy.

Another good one is Enclave.

I'm looking forward to d3, but they must must make the graphics better.

more skill options, smarter monsters, interactive NPC's and a bigger world and I couldn't care less about the graphics

Well, I do not have the modding skills to convert something like UT into a Diablo in 3D. For an "easy" conversion you still need a good Skinner.

It would be cool to see my Meleemancer tote a Flak Cannon.

nah, no way! i would quit, or just keep playing d2 instead.
keep in mind that games have been, and probably will be, ruined because of those "Hey, lets make it 3d!!"-ideas. The list can be made long, but to name only a few;

-Civilization 2 vs Civilization 3... Whoa, talk about ruining gameplay!
-Worms 1-2-3-whatever vs Worms 3d... Once again, gameplay lost. I still play the old ones, just like civ2 ;)
-Rollercoaster Tycoon 1-2 vs Rollercoaster Tycoon 3... Hell, it took me 15 mins to find out how to make that rollercoaster!! Old favorite gone wrong

I dont know about you others, but i care about gameplay, not graphics. sweet looks is just a bonus!
(this does affect computergames, not ... girls? :P )

no girls and games are very much alike. they can't look bad but it's much more important how they play.

I am thinking it will be more a trouble to cross the genre of FPS with skill point based action RPG such as D2.

Rune was good as it is addictive hack and slash melee action but that was that, some devoted dude tried to make an RPG mode which turned out fun but nothing like rpg; it goes something along the line that character have to level up and earn skills, the warrior can enlarge himself (not that kind of enlarge) to 1.5 time as normal player size, thus have superb reach. Or haste, so the player run and hack faster.

The thief can go partial invisible, i.e. invisible when stand still and when moving it leave an imprint for people to see>> predator style.

the mage can cast a time-limited-fly, poison breath (revivaler) and fire bolt at “high” level.

Where as the more interesting druid can summon monsters or barrier such as small / large trees, whereas the small tree is good idea because it really helps to stop monster or PVP pursuit, the large tree have a advantage to impart the player’s vision so that he cannot see where the target is. But the summons are either neutral or hostile to the summoner and everyone else

All in all Rune was fun but merging FPS Fantasy RPG will have loads of implication on Game balance.
