Advanced Socketing Tactic?

I would like to know more about the 'obtain 3 socket phaseblade trick'.

Many of you will know that getting a 3 socket phaseblade is hard, but you can find a craked phaseblade, use the cube recipe to reset it to a normal phaseblade (and hence set it's ilvl to 1,) then when socketed by Larzuk it will recieve 3 sockets becuase that's the most a ilvl 1 phaseblade can have.

What I am really interested in is how do you know that and ilvl 1 phaseblade can have 3 sockets max? Is there a link/table/file/anything that I can get so I could know this for other items? If anyone knows of a place where I could get this information I would appreciate it very much, thanks.

This table shows the max number of sockets according to ilvl : http://www.diabloii.net/items/sockets-list.shtml , with a few corrections : ilvl range is 1-25, 26-40, 41+.....and all 4 "circlet" types are wrong

This is a worthy page in and of itself.

Sorry, why would anyone want a 3 sock phaseblade? Obviously something to do with a runeword ... although i'm too tired to think about it or look it up. :cheesy:

Lately, i've found many 3 sock phaseblades just from doing pit runs, pindle, shenk and Lower Kurast runs. I'm finding it harder to get 6 sock ones personally.

I cannot remember that I ever found a cracked phaseblade and I doubt these exist at all.

Because of their base speed, phaseblades are popular weapons for the for the Crescent Moon runeword. Its main feature is the chance to cast static field and it doesn't need expensive runes (Shael, Um, Tir).

Getting a 6 socket one is very easy. Phase blades can drop in L41+ areas only, so Larzuk will put 6 sockets into any clean one.

Yes, they do. At the stage in the game where Phase Blades are among the highest TCs that can drop, the chance of findning a Cracked one is decent.

You can apply the same principle to elite armors (if you want 3 sockets), elite merc weapons, etc.


As a sidenote: I would never use up a Larzuk reward on a non-magical item that would have 2/3 chance to get the desired number of sockets with one of the socketing recipes (like the items discussed in this thread).

jiansoz, remember almost all these guys play on Bnet; the huge prevalence of rushing (especially since the HF quest was improved in 1.10) means Larzuk quests are practically free.
