I was in a trade game the other day, and someone tried trading me a 1100+ defense shaftstop. I thought that was quite a bit higher than normal, isnt it? Was this an "upped" item? If so, how do you do it? If it involves some shady activity, just let me know, im not looking to get banned.

1 Ko Rune + 1 Lem Rune + 1 Perfect Diamond + Exceptional Unique Armor = Elite Version of Armor

That's the cube formula to upgrade all armor: belts, boots, helms, gloves... not just body armor. But it has to be exceptional unique. Nothing shady about it. So don't worry about getting banned. I posted a similar Thread in here (on this same page) called Crafting comments requested.

If you play Ladder, Single Player, or open B.net (basically anything except non-ladder b.net) you can upgrade exceptional uniques to elite. Check the Arreat Summit's horadric cube page for the recipes.

An upgraded shaftstop would be Boneweave instead of Mesh Armor. Boneweave has 399-505 base defense, and a Shaftstop Boneweave can range from 1117 to 1616 defense. So if someone's offering a 1100 boneweave, they got a crappy roll.

Non-upgraded unique armors always get their max defense possible, but when you upgrade them, it uses the full defense range of the new armor type, so you can get a good defense roll, or a bad one.

does it affect the requirements of the item that you "up"?

Yeah, the requirements change to the ones for the new base item type.

This may be of some help:

Most of the Cube recipes can be found here :) . (www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/cube.shtml)
