how come my merc doesnt seem to gain a single xp anymore after lvl 73?

Your merc cannot be a higher level then you, and cannot be level 99, only up to 98. I know that you are level 73, and when you turn 74, your merc will gain exp. The merc just can't be a higher level then you.

He's right, if your merc is the same level as you, then he/she will now gain exp or level up untill your level is higher than your merc's level.

Completelly true! You have to make sure you are always at least 1 lvl higher than him.
